PHUKET: Thais staged a protest today outside the Indonesian consulate in the province of Songkhla over the smoke haze that has enveloped the south of the country, including Phuket and the Andaman holiday coast.
The protesters called on Indonesia to end the health risk in Thailand to children and the elderly.
Thailand's government has yet to comment publicly on the haze, which for almost a month has been causing health conerns in Singapore and Malaysia and has posed a threat to tourism in southern Thailand.
The protest letter delivered by about 15 people to officials at the consulate today read:
Dear Indonesia,
We're Thai people who are living in southern Thailand. We are enduring problems from the haze that came from your country. Our children, our elderly people are suffering respiratory complaints and have to go to hospital. We're wondering how long it will be before the haze will end.
We would like to ask you people to join us to sent a message to your Government to solve the problem, and to take responsibility for the problem. We're sure a caring government with all the information can fix the problem as soon as possible.
We're changing and so the world can change.
Regards,
Hat Yai and Songkhla people
