Lars-Goran Dikander - better known by some as ''Colin'' - died in hospital in Chumpon province on Monday morning, just as he said he would, his wife Somnan said today. He was aged 66.
The pair had set up a rescue centre in Chumpon, Khun Somnan's home province, after leaving Phuket late last year.
Colin arrived on Phuket as a tourist before the 2004 tsunami and stayed as a Kusoldharm Foundation volunteer before becoming a police volunteer, Khun Somnan said.
Initially based at Chalong Police Station, Colin moved to Karon when the new station opened there two years ago.
He equipped his own car as a rescue vehicle, even adding a siren.
Colin was shocked and surprised when Garry Halpin, a police volunteer from New Zealand, was arrested on drugs charges. ''This is the worst,'' Colin wrote on his Facebook page. ''Holy shit Garry, I say.''
Halpin was later sentenced to four years and 10 months in jail.
Among the cases with which Colin assisted Phuket police were the murders involving Swedes Tommy Viktor Soderlund and Johan Sebastian Ljung, now serving life for killing Maksim Schantz on Phuket in 2011, and Briton Lee Aldhouse, who was sentenced last year to 25 years in jail for stabbing to death former US marine Dashawn Longfellow.
Colin said he followed a hunch and sped to the Phuket bus terminal after Longfellow's murder but failed to arrive in time to stop Aldhouse fleeing the island. Aldhouse was eventually apprehended in Britain and extradited back to Thailand.
Colin hailed from Borlange in Sweden. The cremation takes place in Chumpon tomorrow.
Lars-Goran Dikander sounds like a man who gave back to his community, both as a volunteer then a Police Volunteer and a rescue center. Sadly years ago someone told me the good die young and his passing only confirms such.
