PHUKET: The first 40 billion baht in cash is to be given to farmers in Thailand tomorrow are part of the order from the coup commander to make repayment of the failed rice subsidy scheme a priority, it has been announced.
The National Peace and Order Maintaining Council ordered the Finance Ministry to repay the full 80 billion baht owing to farmers under the failed rice subsidy scheme of the Yingluck Shinawatra government.
The scheme, designed to boost prices, actually led to rice prices falling internationally as other countries rushed to replace Thailand as a rice supplier to the world.
Crowds are expected at the Farmers' Bank tomorrow as the first cash becomes available through the Finance Ministry. The move is expected to make the coup more popular in regions where Red Shirts live and work.
In other moves, the police chiefs in all regions except Region 8, which oversees Phuket and the other 13 southern provinces, are to be replaced by their deputies.
The change is said to be so that the former police chiefs can be relieved of their stressful roles.
