Hope he recovers, but he must of been going at some rate of knots for that car to end up looking like that, slow down folks, life is precious,....

I have a suggestion. Put the power poles underground.

It would appear pointless to put power poles underground, I think you mean power lines under ground?
While a good idea in theory, it does create other issues. Conductor sizes have to be increased as heat dissipation is not as efficient, resistance increases with temperature.
Insulated conductors are required and waterproofing of conduits becomes critical to avoid cross arcing between active conductors and moisture tracking to earth.
Connection points all have to be water tight enclosures, the list goes on.
Increase in cost between above and below ground would easily be 10 times on flat, easy to install ground.

A single vehicle crash can only be attributed to driver error or fault.
If he was speeding and lost control, it's driver error.
If the conditions were wet and he lost control, it driver error,
If the tyres were worn or unsuitable, it's driver error.
If the vehicle suffered a mechanical fault, its driver error for not maintaining the vehicle.
If the driver did not own the vehicle and just borrowed it, it's driver error for no ensuring the vehicle was safe or adequate.
The pole was just standing there, where it had for numerous years, minding its own business, holding out its hands to support the power lines, off on the side of the road. It's hardly the fault of the pole. It didn't just decide, hey, here comes a car, I think I will jump out in front of it!
Pole this time, next time maybe a tree. Let's remove all trees.
Next time a fence or house, remove them all.
Just where do you stop?
Some people don't believe that rules apply to them, not only road rules but also those of Newton and Darwin!

What was he doing out driving at 4:30 a.m.? I'm always tucked in bed with a cup of green tea and a book by 10 p.m. every night. Why do so many falangs in Thailand seem to want to live a dangerous and unhealthy lifestyle?

1.Because so many farang in Thailand were also at-risk in their own countries prior to washing up on Thai shores, bringing with them the baggage (alcoholism, personality disorders, etc.)that snares them here, and helps perpetuate an unfair tag to the other half or more of expats that adapt and even flourish in the Kingdom.
2.With regards to crashes, Manowar is correct( IMHO ); even police usually attribute most accidents to extenuating circumstances, road conditions and the like, when driver error is the cause 99% of the time (bald tyres aside)in a myriad of ways, that would constitute an essay in its own right.

Andy, you are a good boy, being in bed by 10pm... I guess to keep you happy they should bring back the curfew. Whatever his reason for being out it almost cost him his life, these accidents serve to remind us that we are not immortal... drive safe, stay alive.

Returning from Patong, I fell asleep at the wheel, possibly a result of drink spiking, it is unusual for this to have happened..??

AP, not unusual at all. I had a similar incident at the old Rock City a few years back. Luckily I noticed the symptoms and left but could only make it across the road to the park where I woke up about 2 or 3 hours later sleeping against a tree. The second part of the story, walking home with my first experience at being mugged, will have to wait for another day.
