The plan to elevate a section of Sarasin Bridge as a viewing platform

Phuket's New Bridge Set for July Opening

Wednesday, June 1, 2011
PHUKET: THE NEW bridge linking Phuket with neighboring Phang Nga is due to open on July 20, the Director of the Highways Department, Arun Sanae, said yesterday.

''Provided the work can be done and is not affected by rain, that's the date we are aiming for,'' he said. ''Right now, it's 96 percent complete.''

Traffic may begin using the bridge from the end of June.

Work on the new bridge at a cost of 377 million baht began on June 30, 2009. It replaces Sarasin Bridge, the one-way link off Phuket, which has always been lower than Thepkasattri Bridge, the newer one-way bridge for traffic coming onto the island.

Under the plan, Sarasin Bridge will be retained as a walking and fishing tourist attraction and its middle section will be raised as a viewing platform, allowing yachts for the first time to pass beneath all three bridges.
