The village takes shape again with the help of technical college students

Phuket Village Wins a Fresh Start After Big Blaze

Tuesday, February 23, 2010
A VILLAGE damaged by fire last year has been fully restored and will be officially handed over to 17 families this afternoon.

The sea gypsies in Hin Lookdeaw, near the Tachatchai checkpoint in Phuket's north, have helped 27 students from Phuket Technical College to rebuild the homes in a safer style since the fire.

Before the blaze, the homes were built close together but the new homes, linked by boardwalks, are a safe distance apart and more robust in construction.

Phuket Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob, who was planning to be at the village for today's formal handover, quickly organised help for the 85 villagers made homeless by the blaze on June 29.

Many local authorities and charities also speedily organised accommodation and assistance for the homeless villagers.

Most of the students lived and worked in the village for long periods, making practical use of their skills and learning as they built.

The rebuilding project leader, teacher Pean Tongchai, believes the experience has been good for the students, both in terms of their skills and social outlook.
