PHUKET: Now-dead officials in the Phuket Land Titles Office are being blamed for issuing a chanote title in southern Phuket that includes a public canal and a public track alongside the canal.
Vice Governor Somkiet Sangkaosutthirak and the Director of the Damrungtam complaints office, Praphan Kanprasang, visited the canal in Chalong yesterday at the request of local residents.
The pair established to their satisfaction that the canal was a traditional klong that had a long history and was part of the community's assets.
However, the owner of the property, Somkon Tansakul, was also able to produce a genuine land title deed that gave him legitimate possession of the canal and the land on both sides. His grandfather was the original owner.
The mystery is whether the chanote was issued before the canal was dug or the other way around. As all the officials involved have long since died, the mystery will be difficult to explain.
