PHUKET: ''Airport cities'' continue to be among plans for Phuket and five other major Thai airports under a 31.26 billion baht plan that will go up for approval next month.
The ambitious Airports of Thailand schemes would include different-sized projects for the various airports. A shopping mall, sports complex and facilities for aviation businesses are in the mix, with the project to begin at Phuket and the major Bangkok airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang.
Phuket's additional development, with Don Muang, would involve an AoT outlay of 13.26 billion baht - 9.3 billion baht for community and shopping malls on a 60 rai area at Don Muang, and the other 3.96 billion for a private jet centre and facilities at Phuket airport.
AoT plans a joint investment worth 11 billion with the private sector at Suvarnabhumi. A 300 rai plot would be developed as a sports complex and another 7 billion would be spent on a shopping complex near AoT headquarters, opposite the airport.
Details have yet to be released about where space will be found at Phuket Interational Airport for the expansion, with the current renovation due to take the passenger capacity from 6.5 million to 12.5 million.
Increased popularity will see Phuket come close to that figure of 12.5 million this year, with the new international terminal not due to open until next year.
The Airports of Thailand board is to consider the ''Airport Cities'' projects at a board meeting next month. If the go-ahead is given, the Phuket additions are expected by 2017.

I can understand this being an option for both BKK airports as they are major transfer points. Phuket is different as it is an end destination. Any improvements to the airport will be beneficial but I'm not so sure about the other proposed facilities.
