MORE THAN 10 resort and condominium projects are making 2008 a boom year for construction and development in Patong.
The outgoing mayor of Patong, Pian Keesin, told Phuketwan that the value of the projects was more than five billion baht.
Khun Pian, who is standing for re-election next month, said Patong remained a popular place for tourists, generating an estimated 40 percent of the island's tourism revenue.
The Patong projects under construction in 2008 are mid-scale, of 60 to 125 units.
Khun Pian also said there was a continuing stream of projects that would come online between 2009 and 2012, provided they received official approval.
The total value of those projects was around 10 billion baht.
Among the approved projects are Likit Plaza, a combination of shophouses, accommodation, condominiums and a resort on Phang Muang Road, behind Jungceylon.
The first phase includes six blocks of five-storey shophouses, with accommodation above the retail outlets, or offices.
The second phase, a seven-storey four-star resort of 105 units to be called the Andakira Grand Hotel, is expected to be completed in April 2009. A third phase will include more shophouse offices, accommodation, and a block of condominium residences.
The condominiums, with a price range of four million baht to 14 million baht, are expected to go on sale in July 2008.
Other projects include the Patong Bay Resort and Spa (79 rooms) at Kalim, the New Family Resort and Spa of 63 rooms, on the corner of the beach road turning back to Phuket City, the three-phase Lotus Condominium, beginning with 12 units, the Chabawadee Resort of 60 rooms, near Patong municipal offices, and the B-Lay Patong Hotel of 125 rooms.
The prosaically-named Seven Storeys Condominium, of 53 units, and the Baramee Hotel, of 79 rooms, will both be close to the Likit Plaza project, behind Jungceylon.
Construction work on the road behind Jungceylon is continuing at the same time as the construction projects.
The ibis Resort and La Flora Phuket are among the new resorts that have opened in Patong this year, with the Seagull at the southern end of beach road set to open in an expanded version before the high season.
