Governor Wichai Praisa-ngob inspects the troubled estate

Mediation Bid to Settle Phuket Property Dispute

Saturday, November 7, 2009
A MEDIATION session will be held on November 30 in an attmept to settle the long-running dispute between developers Phanason and the residents of an estate in the Vichit district of Phuket City.

Vice Governor Smit Parawichai, the CEO of the local administration Orborjor Paiboon Upatising and Phuket City police chief Colonel Wanchai Eakpornpit and an officier from the Phuket office of the Consumer Protection Board will form the mediating panel.

Residents who claim to have legal title and others who admit to being temporary occupiers have been seeking satisfaction from the developers.

Prolonged court action appears to be some time from resolution.

Both sides have agreed to the mediation process.

A truck driver accused of firing shots when residents blocked his path to the site has given himself up to officers. Phanason meti his bail of 300,000 baht.

Residents had threatened to blockade the Phuket City police headquarters because officers had failed to arrest the man swiftly.

Residents did not work but all stayed at the estate on Friday amid concerns that the bulldozers would flatten the mostly incomplete homes on the estate.

Phanason made it known it would pay some people 5000 baht or 10,000 baht to give up their claim and move, but there were no takers.
