PHUKET: Laguna Phuket has achieved Asia's first precinct-level Silver Certification from EarthCheck, the global environmental benchmarking system for the hospitality industry.
The recognition comes four years after the resort complex embarked on its environmental program. Laguna was previously bronze-rated.
EarthCheck's audit found that the resort's energy consumption was 43.7 percent better than average best practice levels, that water consumption was 46.8 percent better, and that the amount of waste sent to landfill sites was an impressive 75.6 percent better than normal.
The complex's greenhouse gas emissions were 35.8 percent lower than average.
''This is one of the most important achievements for our team, our guests, our community, and for all of our stakeholders' combined effort over the past four years,'' said Laguna Phuket's managing director, Ravi Chandran.
''We now have a valuable management and reporting tool for use in advancing both environmental and business performance, allowing us to monitor sustainable work practices and achieve cost reductions within EarthCheck's important parameters.''
EarthCheck's CEO, Stewart Moore, commended Laguna Phuket on the achievement.
''Achieving certification is not an easy task and many organisations do not make it past the benchmarking stage,'' Moore said.
''Securing a highly-ranked benchmarking result requires a strong commitment across all levels of an organisation and the imbedding of sustainability principles into all policies and procedures.''
The sectors within the Laguna Phuket that have achieved Silver Certification comprise Angsana Laguna Phuket, Banyan Tree Phuket, Laguna Holiday Club Phuket Resort, Laguna Phuket Golf Club (18-hole golf course), Laguna Resorts & Hotels, Laguna Service Company and Outrigger Laguna Phuket Resort & Villas.
