MONKS performed a good fortune ceremony today at the new Courtyard by Marriott Phuket at Patong Beach, with staff looking forward to a high season opening.
The Patong Courtyard comes with a MoMo restaurant, a Hard Rock Cafe, and a deep desire to tap the hip and happening heart of the Phuket food and entertainment market.
About 140 staff are already at work and another 40 are likely to join before the high and wide Courtyard foyer doors, said to be the largest on the island, swing open, most likely in October.
''We found excellent people,'' said General Manager Sigrid Stelling.
She has been overseeing construction of the 390-room Courtyard, formerly the Grand Tropicana Phuket.
''We will have a welcome team to greet guests and we think we have something special to offer.''
With her at the ceremony today was Lutz Mueller, General Manager of Courtyard by Marriott Phuket at Kamala Beach, which is expected to open about the same time as the Patong Courtyard.
The 256-room Courtyard by Marriott Phuket at Surin Beach opened in June, also with a MoMo restaurant.
While each of the three Courtyards will have some similarities, the different locations will influence their respective characters.
The Patong Courtyard has a long frontage onto Ruam Jai Road, next to the Burasari and opposite the Holiday Inn at the southern end of Patong.
Streetside views through large windows are expected to draw plenty of passing guests to sample the food and taste the wines in air-conditioned surrounds.
A series of comfy cosmopolitan zones inside the Courtyard will cater for those who want cake and coffee, wine tastings, internet access, or even an intimate wedding.
The impact is expected to be ''hip and cool.''
As well as offering daytime tours and shopping, the Patong Courtyard will be a vibrant addition to nightlife options in the island's liveliest town, with more surprises to be announced as the opening draws closer.
The Courtyard countdown is on, with bookings now being taken over the Internet. Room rates start at 3999 baht a night.
