A Lovely Bunch

Sunday, November 25, 2007
PLANTATIONS may be on the way out across Phuket as real estate values soar and pineapples or coconuts aren't quite so appealing, to investors at least. But one is here to stay: The Plantation Phuket.

Situated in Kamala, the Platation is in good company, right alongside the much-praised Andara project. It was also built by the same builders who gave Trisara, a little further north, its mix of environment and elegance.

So, if neighbors, location and connections are anything to go by, the Plantation should have plump, ripe produce to sample. Darren White, the 34-year-old sales and marketing director, certainly sees it that way.

???The development is in what is known as Millionaires' Road," he says. "It's a truly stunning and private area with the most spectacular views across the Andaman Sea."

Around sunset, workers on various Kamala hillside projects picnic by the shore here, walking out on therocks at low tide to pluck shellfish directly from the sea. It's a beautiful spot to watch the sun go down.

Among its other virtues, the Plantation is close to Patong and Surin yet Kamala remains an exclusive and peaceful village, with plenty of restaurants and shops.

"The project style is for exclusive villa homes with great facilities," Mr White says. "It consists of 33 apartments and 25 villas in five different styles.

"We have started construction on two show homes, due to be finished before 2008.

"We have completed our apartments stage and have some re-sales in this precinct. We have some other villas under construction so clients can purchase off the plan."

The villas range in size from about 600 square metres to 1200 square metres, depending on design. Some feature indoor and outdoor living areas and various levels, depending on the land plot.

"All villas feature swimming pools overlooking the Andaman Sea, large living areas and they can vary between three and four bedrooms," Mr White says.

"Other facilities include a management service, 24-hour security, a gymnasium and tennis courts."

He sees both investment and live-in are buyers at the Plantation.

"Some buyers come for the warm weather when Europe is cold," he says. "Some come every weekend from Hong Kong and Singapore.

"We have many who have purchased off the plan to benefit from the huge capital growth we have previously shown in other developments."

Phuketwan put Mr White in the hot seat:

Do you think the property business on Phuket will get better or slow down?

It will only get better. Phuket is fast becoming well known throughout the world as a major resort-tourist lifestyle location. Everyday more and more positive publicity featuring Phuket is displayed in world media.

What do you see as the big advantages of Phuket property?

Being a property career professional I always look at capital growth first. Phuket has a reputation for good capital growth.

What do you see as the major issues facing the property industry right now?

No major issues. The Thai political situation and the US dollar have created some attention to the Thailand property market however I think we have seen the bottom of this and the market again is on the move.

Is there any particular project on the island you think is setting the pace in real estate right now?

My personal favorite is Trisara. I love the feel about the development and the villas are beautiful. The first stage was built by Bovis Lend lease who are our builders at the Plantation. Our benchmark is this project and I believe once the Plantation is complete and the landscape is established, we will be on equal par to Trisara. Villas in Trisara now can command $8-10 million.
