DUCK RACING returns to Phuket early next year, and if you plan to join in the fun, now's the time to get quacking.
This is the sport for all those who opt to pass on running in the Phuket marathon, sailing in the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, or walking to the corner shop. If you find being a spectator at the Phuket women's beach volleyball strenuous, duck racing is the sport for you.
Activities are expanding this year with the number of ducks expected to grow, so now's the time to purchase your duck and get into serious training.
Alasdair Forbes, spokesman for the Phuket Community Foundation, says the racing this time around will shift from the Canal Village at Laguna Phuket to the new Latitude events and convention centre nearby, where racers and spectators can have an uninterrupted view of their ducks in action.
Competitors are also being sought for a range of other events requiring exercise. These include dragonboat races for teams of 16, kayak races for teams of two, home-made raft ''survivor'' competitions, and for kids a cardboard boat building race - last one to sink is the winner.
There will be a stage and dance shows, good food and drink, a band and classic car rides, along with other good stuff.
The foundation is gradually expanding its charity impact, giving toy libraries to schools, putting back-lights on motorcycles, and making grants to community groups.
So if you're the kind of person who, er, ducks every other kind of wasteful exertion, the Great Phuket Rubber Duck Race is a day for you to demonstrate your sporting prowess. Pencil in Sunday, January 23 now.
More details will be available soon at www.phuketcharity.org
