What Phuketwan says:
We've always wanted to get into a taxi and say: ''Follow that restaurant.'' Yakiniku is worth pursuing. The restaurant's present home on the bypass road, underneath what's possibly the biggest dining sign on the island, is the eatery's third leap around Phuket City in almost as many years. If there's one indication that Phuket City is definitely a city now, it's the proliferation of restaurants and other businesses in stretches of the ''suburbs'' that were once drive-by desert. The fans of Yakiniku will follow it to the new location, just as they have with previous moves, because it's still among the top-value Japanese spots on Phuket. There's a no-nonsense feel about the place. You can sit at a cubicle and charl away to your heart's content, although the round grillers appear to compromise leg room comfortable a little when compared to the rectangular ones they replaced. Having cooked the food yourself, it's impossible to blame the chef for the way it tastes. And raw fish? No complaints. Conversation always seems to come easy over hot coals, especially when the wasabi hits the sinuses. The plan is to restore ramen and lunch as soon as life becomes a bit more settled. The proprietor thinks this may be the last move for a while, but you never know.

How to find it: In a row of shophouses on the left-hand side of the bypass road, as you head towards Phuket City, about two kilometres from Tesco Lotus.

Parking: Room at the entrance.

What's your beef? If you'd prefer to have yours sizzling on a grill rather than roaming the great Australian outback, then pick up your chopsticks and turn over your juicy steak slice on the tabletop bbq.
