The American stars and stripes on board the USS Ronald Reagan

Phuket Navy League All Set to Celebrate July 4

Monday, May 17, 2010
UPDATE

The Phuket Navy League celebration of July 4 is to be held as a free family picnic at the Headstart International Learning Center directly across from Makro (near Central Festival) in Phuket City from 10am-7pm.

Original Report

OFFICIALS from Phuket's Navy League were meeting senior people from Patong tessaban council today to try to organise a beachfront party for July 4, America's Independence Day.

The party would take the form of a free picnic in Loma Park on the shorefront and run from 10am to 7.30pm, organisers told Phuketwan before meeting the Patong officials.

''We intend to have free music and games for adults and children and offer food and beverages (alcoholic non-alcoholic and bottled water) for sale,'' said an email expanding on the idea.

''The date is in commemoration of America's independence on July 4th 1776 and is a national holiday in the United States. We anticipate that many American expatriates, many other foreign expatriates and many Thai nationals would attend.

''We may very well receive a letter of recognition of this community supported event from the President of the United States."

US Navy warships in the region may also become involved.

Phuket has become the port of choice for many warships seeking a break from tours at sea. Last year, world's largest warship, the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, was among the visitors, and this year the USS Nimitz, which is almost as large, also came to Phuket.

If the plan wins the go-ahead, organisers are confident that a US Navy band would be on hand to play traditional marches and other music.

The Navy band sounds nice - they can be very good - and so does the beer. I just hope they don't try to make theocratic speeches about how our forefathers were born-again Christians.

No offence to the 'cousins' but why should a US holiday be celebrated in Thailand. Is there a reciprocal effort to celebrate Coronation Day in the US?

I am anti-American in the way I feel about their goverment and policies but see no reason why they should not celebrate. I have been to Songkran celebrations in other countries with Thai expats, why should it not be the same here?

God Bless America, down with whiners. If you have never been to America, don't bother commenting. You can't just trust all your European programming forever. Yes, all governments are basically annoying and oppressive to some extent, you try and hush all the insane right wingers in ours or your country and you'll see, everywhere has kooks in power, it's actually kind of depressing, but it doesn't mean you should be anti-France or anti-Tuvalu. Just "critical" is acceptable, but this whole "anti" thing is a silly polarity.

Good idea, there are many Americans residing here in Phuket. For the post about celebrating foreign holidays in USA, each community has various parades to celebrate their holidays in Los Angeles. You might note that this is NOT a government sponsored event!

Dear All
OK many of you don't like the USA. This is OK, you are not forced to join the celebration.
However, we all have to remember this: President Reagan made it possible. Otherwise maybe we all would be not here and instead spending our vacation at the Baltic Sea or in the forest of Siberia.
Think about It?

I will give this one a miss.

As for Ronny Reagan saving us all, haha, what a laugh . I think Maggie Thatcher was pulling his strings .

Another case of Americans thinking they saved the world . History goes well beyond your two hundred years, my American friends.

I actually have a lot of respect for the US Navy guys, they took me and my children on a tour of the USS Ronald Reagan and it shone a really positive light on who and what they are.

I may turn up and have a look with the kids (none of us American), I always think it's important to enjoy other cultures. I'll ignore the "RR saved Thailand" crazies.

I am deeply anti-American concerning their politics and policies. Americans all over the world are loud, pretentious and bad educated. The less we see you around, the best it is or try to educate yourself in a nice and decent behavior.

Feel free to forget about the American and 4th of July aspects. The event itself is going to be a great day for families. Food, drink, games. Really looking forward to bringing the family and letting my kids run with the other kids.
