JUST like boat names, there are some exhibition names we love and others we think don't quite work. Any boat called Pimex would struggle to win our hearts.
Perhaps that's why most people avoid the acronym and just call the Phuket International Marine Exhibition 2010 the ''boat show.'' Hang the elaborate moniker.
Usually the boat show complements the King's Cup Regatta that has been a fixture of early Decembers for a long time. Not any more.
There was no boat show in 2009 because it has become a stand-alone event, beginning on January 7 and lasting for four days.
While the show has built up a following in association with the biggest regatta in South-East Asia, will it draw the numbers as an event in its own right?
All will be revealed. While the regatta is all about sailing and socialising, Pimex seems to be more about power boats.
There has always been a strong divide between the yachties and the powerboat people, although built on mutual respect for each other and the water.
We guess there wasn't much chance of converting the sailors to power, and perhaps research suggested that more power boat types are around on Phuket in January than in early December.
The promoters say that 45 leading boat brands will be on display at Phuket's Royal Phuket Marina, where the event was held in 2008.
Andy Dowden, the show's Director, says: ''We are looking forward to another great year. We are expecting the event to generate more business and stimulate the industry for a strong 2010. The results will benefit not only the marine industry but will also contribute to the Thailand's tourism, and the property business on the Island.''
One first-time inclusion is the introduction of a series of seminars organised by the Human Development Forum Foundation. The Phuket Maritime Forum will facilitate discussions on ''new perspectives and advancements in policy and technology surrounding harbor security, archipelago states security, security of sea lanes, and new sustainable technologies.''

The show runs from noon to 8pm except on the fourth and final day, Sunday January 10, when it sails over the horizon at sunset.
