Poolside at Friendship Beach last night for Tony Kelsey-Stead's farewell

Phuket Farewells a Man of Many Talents

Wednesday, May 5, 2010
THERE was music. There was laughter. And there were friends galore, having fun. It was the kind of event that Tony Kelsey-Stead would have loved.

And who can say? If there is a place for recently-departed and much-loved Phuket writer-musicians-DJs to hang out, perhaps he did.

Kelsey-Stead, 58, died in London last month after a battle with leukemia. Tony, a retired science teacher came to Phuket ''many years ago'' and immediately fell in love with the place and the people he met.

A talented musician, he played in a number of local bands, he wrote for the 'Phuket Post', he started the amateur drama group, the Andaman Players, and he had his own music show on radio station 91.5FM.

He was perhaps best known among his extremely young fans for his role as the dame in the annual Christmas pantomimes staged at the Green Man pub.

The Players farewell in Chalong was followed last night by a musical farewell at the Friendship Beach.

Last night Tony's many muso mates paid tribute with a non-stop jam session. Performers included his old band, The Groove Doctors, the Colin Hill Band, the Bamboo Jam Band, singer Karen Beresford, the Rockin' Angels Band, and guitarist Sam Wilkinson.

At both functions, the hat was passed around to raise money for Tony's devoted partner, Fon.

The Green Man party, which featured a silent auction and a whip around, raised almost 20,000 baht for her. Publican Howard Digby-Johns also donated 10 percent of all drink sales on the night to the cause. Last night's party raised a similar amount.

Dearest Tony, you would have been proud of us, we partied all night and I crawled home safely at dawn....all in your honor. Rest in peace my great friend and inspiration...and ''the show must go on''..and so it will.

Louise - what sort of a disrespectful, world-weary, out-of-context comment is that? You're a very sad little person.

This is to thank all you wonderful musos who turned up for Tony's tribute night at Friendship Beach. Thanks for leaving the egos at home and all giving 100 percent to make it a memorable musical event in Tony's memory.

The Little Rock Band deserve an honorable mention for their storming set with Gig. Also The Rocking Angels were 'cooking on gas' (muso talk).

A huge thank you to Byron , DJ Doris and the rest of the guys from 91.5 FM for providing the lights and filling the gaps between bands.

Finally, thanks to Friendship Beach for providing the venue, free buffet and drinks for the players, Charlie managed to grab a couple of numbers on the drums (he also cooks).

To all the musos who didn't get a chance to play, sorry guys, I did my best but we ran out of time.

A night I will never forget, filled with the true spirit of love for music and the great respect and love we have for Tony Kelsey Stead. I will miss you, my friend. RIP

Oh come on! Some of the subjects probably look less healthy than Tony now does. The world weariness stems from the near-beatification that occurs when pretty much anyone here pops their clogs. Don't worry, Sam (Wilkinson, I wonder?), we'll hold a beano for you and the various papers, blogs etc will describe you in suitably glowing terms. Sic transit gloria mundi and all that. Toodle-pip.

Tony made friends v easily, he was the "life and soul of any party".

He'd lived here for three years and got involved in all of the things that interested him. HE SHOULDN'T HAVE DIED SO YOUNG.

I'm his wife and can't believe that he's gone. We'd been together for nearly 30 years until we retired out here and he left me for his "devoted partner" that he met in a bar.

I agree with Louise to a certain extent about the 'beautification' that happens when anyone dies - but this is a site for positive memories - and Tony left behind many positive memories.

I have to agree with Sam on his opinion of you Louise. You come across as a (failed) attention seeker! Poor girl.
