Best Restaurant of 2008 contender
Telephone: 081 8943750
Open: 9am-11pm
Address: Overlooking Kata Noi or the road between Kata and Cape Promthep
Style: Thai holiday
Price range: Reasonable. Cocktails (Bamboo Paradise, Kata Noi Sunset) from 160 baht to 180 baht with a cocktail of the shrimp kind at 80 baht and a crab salad similarly priced. Beer Chang 70/130 baht, fruit juice 60 baht.
Specialty: Seafood with free sunset thrown in and holiday favorites such as chicken and cashews.
What Phuketwan says: The After Beach Bar & Restaurant and its companion, the Small View Point, attract tourists with a degree of inevitability, the way beaches pull in tides. There's something endlessly appealing about sitting high up above the west coast of the island, watching the sun go down. The competition between these two rival destinations remains friendly, with parking boys out the front competing to wave down each passing tuk-tuk. It may be said that at one bar or the other, the sunset lasts a few minutes longer. Test it for yourself by running quickly between the bars, or simply have another drink. What we can say is that the competition is just as intense when it comes to the music. If Bob Marley is not singing, you can bet it must be Jack Johnson. We remember when these bars were both much smaller and didn't reach out towards the horizon quite so far. For reasonably priced Thai holiday fare, especially seafood, and a glass or two of alcohol that simply cannot cast a haze over a brilliant sunset memory, one or both of these bars is a must-do. It's an odd thing, but down in the Katathani resort, with a view much less impressive, drinks and a meal will cost you about three times as much.
How to find it: Drive up from Cape Promthep towards Kata or the other way.
Parking: A busy night can force cars to stretch back down the hill. It's always a little bit hairy here. Perhaps one day the extended cliffside car park will go up alongside the restaurants.
