Spinach noodles with salmon, served at 154

154, Royal Phuket City Hotel, Phuket City

Thursday, February 14, 2008
Best Restaurant of 2008 contender

Telephone: 076 233333 extension 3621

Open: 6am-midnight

Address: Phang Nga Road, downtown Phuket City. We figure 154 may have something to do with it.

Style: Expanded bakery cafe for day and night dining

Price range: Low-price resort meals. Deep-fried chicken wings with crispy bread 120 baht, grilled breast of duck with raspberry sauce 225 baht, NZ tenderloin steak 350 baht, spinach noodles with salmon cream sauce 220 baht, grilled mackerel steak (Indian style) 150 baht

Specialties: Steak, pizza and blueberry cheese. (But, we suspect, not all on one plate or even at one sitting.) Home-made icecream is another popular menu item. Breakfast and dinner sets are available at low prices.

What the manager says: Guests from inside and outside are our customers. 154 is one big coffee shop and restaurant, and we can cater for up to 200 people.

What Phuketwan says: We remember 154 from the days when it was a small bakery hanging off Royal Phuket City. Now the 154 brand has expanded to take the whole corner. It now includes a larger selection of tempting pastries and desserts, coupled with a colorful cafe. This part of Phuket City does not have many meeting places of this standard, and residents and visitors should add it to that most essential list of places where a good cup of coffee can be found. They also stock wine to have with the steak or pizza, and perhaps even the blueberry cheese. And if you must mix business with pleasure, there are several Internet computers, for a fee.

How to find it: Royal Phuket City is the multi-storey landmark hotel in Phang Nga Road, at the intersection with Tilok Uthit 2 Road.

Parking: Great undercover parking in the hotel, perfect shade on a hot day.
