Brian Russell Finn and Luke Russell Finn: arrested over a 2013 lunch bill

New Zealand Pair Arrested on Arrival on Phuket Over Unpaid Lunch Bill

Tuesday, September 15, 2015
PHUKET: Two New Zealand men who arrived at Phuket International Airport last night found themselves arrested immediately over a meal they consumed on the Thai holiday island two years ago.

Father and son Brian Russell Finn and Luke Russell Finn were being held at a police station in Patong today in advance of a court appearance that could see them fined or jailed.

According to officers from Kathu Police Station, the pair ate lunch at the Blue Marine Resort and Spa on September 5, 2013, but left without paying.

On September 27 that year, the police obtained arrest warrants. By then, the Finns had left Thailand.

When the pair stepped off a flight at Phuket airport at 10.30pm last night, Immigration officials noted that both were on the blacklist and held them until officers from Patong arrived to escort them to the police station.

Two years is a long time for the bill to be presented for a meal. In that time, the resort has changed management and is now the Centara Blue Marine Resort and Spa.

The men are likely to face Phuket Provincial Court today.

Phuketwan called the New Zealand Embassy to check whether envoys had been made aware of the case and was told to call a number for the media in New Zealand.

My wife and I have left without paying our bar bill at FantaSea in Phuket and the bar manager was waiting for us at the exit three hours later. We simply forgot and this can happen by accident. Seems like a long delay between the police being notified and acting on the complaint.

@ Terry - Oh yes, eat and drink for 15,000 baht and then simply forget to pay is quite understandable.

15,000Baht for two people! Wow that's a lot of food and probably drink in Phuket. A couple of days already spent in jail should jog their memory into paying next time. Sick and tired of people coming to Thailand and thinking they can do all types of things they would not dream about in their own country.

I am afraid, I am pretty far from ok, that we don't believe what we read in other media. Nor has there been any reason to presume these two are guilty. Our advice to you would be to wise up to the way the media works and to not declare people guilty without a judge doing so first. Surely you can think for yourself?

Only about 100 or so shoplifting days left until Christmas for all the Kiwis.

Are you saying another Phuket based publication is wrong?

It's not something reported on this site therefore it's not something we can confirm as a fact.

Good to hear. Next time we will insist at the police station to file a report when passengers refuse to pay the taxi bill.

A 600 AUD lunch? Surely not.

Can't say, Pete. Please ask wherever you read that.

I bet they have to pay upfront for any meals from now on.

nearly $600 for a meal at the blue marine resort!! who in their right mind would expect to pay that for a meal at any establishment.. (moderated)

what is the criteria for getting views published by your NEWS outlet also ,you seem to have conflicting rules on anonymity or otherwise

Editor Comment:

The views have to be logical and make sense, edward, and not distort the facts. We're not interested in opinions (blah, everybody has 'em) but in informed analysis that adds value. If you're just sounding off, don't bother.
We have no way of knowing whether you are a real person or an invention. The internet is riddled with fakers.

There is more to the story that is not being told... Normal for LOS...

How did they know their names to be put on blacklist/warrant? How many places you know ask for a passport to have lunch?

Just my 2 cents ;)

Likely, they did a runner on their room tab...
