General Prayuth mentioned Phuket in his weekly telecast tonight

Top Admiral to Probe Beaches, Excessive Garbage and Park Encroachment on Phuket

Friday, July 11, 2014
PHUKET: One of the most senior officers in Thailand's junta is coming to Phuket on Sunday to assess action on the beaches, to examine progress in regaining stolen parkland and to inspect Phuket's garbage ''mountain.''

Phuket was mentioned more than once tonight in the weekly national television broadcast by Thailand's governing National Council for Peace and Order chief, General Prayuth Chan-ocha.

The general announced a visit to Phuket by the Commander-in-Chief of The Royal Thai Navy, Admiral Narong Pipatanasai, on Sunday and Monday.

The admiral will be accompanied by a team from the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry.

The highly-placed officials will be gathering information about Sirinath National Park, where land belonging to the nation has allegedly been claimed by individuals and converted into resorts or luxury villas, or earmarked for similar developments.

A visit is likely to Phuket's sole garbage dump, where incinerators remain unable to destroy all the waste created on Phuket and where a toxic trash ''mountain'' continues to grow.

The scores of jet-skis on Patong and several other Phuket beaches vanish whenever officials visit the beaches. A decision has yet to be announced about whether they are to be banned, as the majority wish.

General Prayuth noted tonight that Phuket's beaches had been cleared of commercial operations and mentioned Patong.

''We have taken care of beach arrangements in Patong,'' he said. ''We ask for cooperation at every beach where there is tourism.

''If we build shops and restaurants onto the beaches, it would be unsightly and disorderly.''

A senior Army officer on Phuket told Phuketwan that administrators and Phuket's police have been told to make sure changes made by the NCPO remain in place.

In other parts of his talk tonight, the general said that the NCPO wanted to work as fast as possible to implement changes for the better throughout Thailand.

He added that efforts were being made to stimulate tourism in Japan, India, Hong Kong, Asean, Europe and China.

He noted that Thai Airways was ''facing problems'' and said that efforts were being made to organise more charter flights to promote Thailand.

I think if they dig deeper they will uncover many under-table-deals which facilitated land purchases. First on the list are properties which exceeded the legal height level restrictions, and why the law was not adequately enforced. Second, would be titles which were not intended for development, which miraculously changed their status to either nor sor sam or full chanote title. Third on the list would be the legal facilitators that colluded with the land office officials to expedite administrative red tape. Indeed many were involved with the rape of prime real estate for short term profit. Last but not least, land purchase/sale reform must be radically simplified and made more transparent. Lets hope the junta will execute a thorough enquiry, no doubt there will be many running for cover !

I just hope it isn't too late. After years of broken promises to clean things up many of us have left never to return.

We still haven't seen the high profile arrests promised a few weeks ago.

It's no good locking up a few scapegoats whilst the big fish swim free. If all that land in Sirinath Park has been stolen there should be officials held accountable.

For example why aren't the people who were renting out Surin beach arrested? Even Dang the street dog knows who they are.

Drove Beach road Patong on Friday at 18:00 hrs. Still same tuktuk, black plated taxis and minibus mess as before. Not seen a single police officer. Looks like Army and police 'give' Patong back to the transport mafia.

Perhaps best to wait until they do what they plan to do, Koert. Hard to expect the tuk-tuk and taxi drivers to react in advance.

hi Ed seems the jet skis act in advance very well & simply do a amazing disappearing Act before a official is even near a beach and happens on right given day just amazing, whats wonderful to see is that Phuket is starting to discover Town Planning.

I would suggest following Bali's lead from a few years ago and having a blanket ban on all construction in phuket for the next 3-5 years, effective immediately. This will give time to check proper documents but also give time to allow phuket a rest from the constant noise, dirt and destruction which has blighted the island for too long. There is clear over supply in the market. Let's sell the properties currently sitting empty before building more

@arun muruga ,koert , sliclmelb, why doesn't everyone write to the NACC complaint office in Phuket town if you all have things to say. There's a lot of corruption about, why not help these people to put it right ?
