Thailand, US Envoy Meet to Talk Trafficking, Drugs, Human Rights

Thursday, May 7, 2015
THE THAI Justice Minister Gen. Phaitun Khumchaya and a US charge d'affaires have met to discuss many issues including Thailand's crackdown on human trafficking.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary for Justice Chanchai Chaiyanukit said the US Charge d'Affaires Patrick Murphy and his entourage met on Wednesday with the Thai Justice Minister Gen. Phaitun Khumchaya and the ministry's executives to discuss cooperation in various fields.

The Minister asked the charge d'affaires to support Thailand's operations to combat the narcotic drugs trade in the Golden Triangle.

He also reported the measures the country is taking against human trafficking to the US envoy, saying the Thai government was taking the problem very seriously, the deputy permanent secretary said.

The minister told the US envoy that Thailand was amending many laws to come into line with international standards in respect to human rights, Mr Chanchai added.

The US envoy accepted that Thailand was in a transition period and on the way to a general election, the deputy permanent secretary said.

I personally don't believe they are taking it seriously yet.
Helicopters and other vehicles can be used to survey thousands of Kilometres to find other camps. Yes its huge, but that is a great exercise for the Army to do.

US support asked for fighting drug trade in Golden Triangle??
As far I always red in press, the Golden Triangle drug trade fighting is going on now for 30(?) years! Is this a thai joke/trick to deviate the international attention from Human trafficking? Thailand has a large standing army, but they all relaxing in their camps and barracks. Simple question: how many army troopers are now this moment operating in The Golden Triangle? And what support they ask from USA? Money? Funny to read about Golden Triangle while this moment in the south of Thailand is a human trafficking tragedy get world attention.

Making new laws and amending existing ones is one thing but enforcing them is something completely different.

The issue of measured enforcement always comes down to how corrupt the law enforcers are. Until Thailand takes serious measure to eradicating corruption then the many issues holding them back to making measurable progress will always be hampered.

Indeed. Areas around international borders are supposed to be secure and even exclusion zones so there should be ample resources and equipment to locate camps that "locals have known about for years".

That is, if there's a will to do so.

Using helicopters with FLIR are very effective or methods as simple as pinpointing heavy mobile phone traffic, which is a lot cheaper.

The Thai Justice Minister will have his work cut out trying to explain "We didn't know" and "We are doing all we can"

The only affirmative action Thai authorities have taken to bring anyone to justice has been to charge 2 journalists who try to draw the attention of the world to this modern day slave trade happening right next to tourists sipping their Margaritas on the beach.

Some track record that is.

As long this thai militair government not act like the Singapore government is doing with corrupt and criminal officials, nothing will change in Thailand. Just transfers? A big joke! The transferred government officials will continue their act at other locations.

The trafficking of people and the finding of many dead Rohingya in the South is being reported every day in bbc.co uk, very bad for Thailand's image but do any Thai officials on the ground really care?
The trafficking has been going on for a few years, it has been widely reported but it is only now that action is being taken, why ?

Editor Comment:

Some authorities care. Some do not. Thailand is no different to any other country in that regard.
