PHUKET: Mystery surrounds the motive of a woman who plunged from Phuket's Thepkasattri Bridge to her death this afternoon.
According to information found in a purse left on the bridge, she was Kemiga Janareporn, 38.
A witness said that the woman was in tears when she got off a bus at Tachatchai, in the far north of Phuket, this afternoon.
She had just arrived on Phuket. She asked a man there to take her to the middle of the bridge, but he declined.
The man, a volunteer in the district, later saw her jump from the bridge. He called a local fisherman to go to her aid in the channel but the woman was dead when the boat reached her.
She left a purse on the bridge indicating her identity.
Both Thepkasattri Bridge, which carries traffic onto Phuket, and the outbound Sarasin Bridge have a history of lovelorn people throwing themselves into the water.
People who feel depressed are advised to talk to family or friends or to contact a doctor.
