The seaman being brought to shore on Phuket early today

Spanish Seaman Saved: Suicide, Self-Harm Become Issues Where Phuket Needs Help

Sunday, March 15, 2015
PHUKET: Marine Police went to the aid of a Spanish seaman about 2am today off the coast of Phuket.

The captain of an Indonesian-registered vessel reported that one of the crew had cuts that were probably self-inflicted.

Marine police organised to transfer the man to Phuket where he was admitted to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City.

Phuketwan has been supplied with the 56-year-old man's name but will withhold it so he has a chance of restarting life without the incident having repercussions.

The number of successful suicides and attempts at self-harm in cries for help appears to have escalated lately on and around the holiday island.

Some people are believed to contemplate suicide and come to Phuket specifically for that purpose. Others run out of money or have romances that go wrong, or find business and money pressures are escalating beyond their control.

Regrettably, there is no charitable organisation outside the hospitals that can offer independent counsel to anyone in that position.

People contemplating suicide or self-harm are advised to talk to family and friends about their issues or consult a doctor.

These stories always make me sad. Maybe a good idea to set up a community beyond or within the already existing ones as the rotary and AA.
