Phuket Beach Water Quality Now in English

Phuket Beach Water Quality Now in English

Tuesday, December 17, 2013
PHUKET: The results of tests taken in August along Phuket's coast show seawater was ''generally found in good condition.'' But doubts still remain about the quality of water close to shore, where people swim.

Tests are carried out at 23 points along Phuket's coast 100 metres off shore and 500 metres off shore, in compliance with international standards.

Latest results have been published online in English for the first time, with a color-coded map of Phuket illustrating the results of two-monthly tests extending back 12 months.

The testing is done by the Phuket Marine Biological Centre Marine & Coastal Resources Research & Development Institute.

An independent water quality expert on Phuket consulted by Phuketwan has, however, echoed the views of honorary consuls who would like to have the quality of water tested close to shore and at the mouths of canals.

Phuket Governor Maitree Intrusud is known to take an interest in the quality of water at Phuket's beaches and went to Patong in August when samples were taken at high tide.

German honorary consul Dirk Naumann and his Dutch counterpart Seven Smulders supported the idea of tests being taken ''near the shore, where the children play.''

Mr Naumann told a meeting with the governor in August: ''Nobody swims 100 metres off Patong beach.'' It is believed Patong earlier this year lost the chance to stage an international triathlon because of the quality of the seawater.

Questions about the proposed tests close to shore are likely to be asked at the next meeting between the governor and honorary consuls in February.

Results of the August tests can be found at http://www.reo15.net/attachments/906_phuketMarineWQuality2013-Eng.pdf

I am sure that there are many places they should test, but a start might be where the klong enters the sea on Surin. At worst the water goes black, at best it just stinks.

A measurement from August publicized 4 months later can be used for absolutely nothing . I am sure that the Governor at his many travels abroad has had amble opportunity to find out what is done to check water quality and beaches , so bring the knowledge to use here as well.

Not relevant for swimmers as too far out to sea. Why can't we have test 5 meters out where most people swim.

When they took these tests in august, they closed off some of the klongs from emptying into the ocean for a few weeks. I know this for a fact because I jog almost daily in either Nai Harn or Karon near the beaches. The water is as filthy as ever and if the tourists could see what I see, they wouldn't set foot in the sea(I haven't gone swimming in the ocean here for at least 5 yrs, not that it was cleaner before that, I just didn't realize the extent of the pollution).

Fair to good? That's good. Now I'm pretty sure, to know, why these results needed so long. Time clears all a bit. Even water pollution in tests from some month ago

Water and tourism ??? what a complex topic! There seems to be several important sub-topics rolled into one story here, but all relevant. On water quality management ??? supply and waste - no excuse, the relevant authorities are confronted with this issue, year in and year out! The technology and planning tools are available and most certainly so too are the funds considering annual tourism taxes collected from tourism on Phuket. What happens when the water tables run dry? Who cares ??? just keep the tourist numbers rising! Does anybody know the true meaning of sustainability?
Ditto for drowning deaths that only climb higher by the year with the same reports in local media ??? drowning death tallies indicate that the tragedies have doubled in the last decade. Why? Not for lack of tourism taxes collected on the island which could contribute to ongoing, accredited international-standard training of lifeguards on the beaches rather than numbers of under-trained guards. Ambulances, paramedics ??? why are there no stations at the major tourist beaches that reap golden money pots every year? Do the relevant authorities really care about public safety? It seems not.

BigP is right. The water on Kata beach is filthy. Years back I loved to swim there daily, the last time I swam was 2 years ago, and when I came out of the water I felt clammy and sticky, ugh !
Pool from then on.
