US Men in Mall Terror; Floods Scramble; Singapore Prefers Locals; Phuket People, Rihanna Wrap

Tuesday, September 24, 2013
UPDATING All Day, Every Day Thailand and Burma (Myanmar) have agreed to speed up the development of the Dawei Economic Zone after Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Myanmar parliamentary president Thura U Shwe Mann discussed the matter. The Kenyan foreign minister, Amina Mohamed, says ''two or three'' Americans are among the mall massacre gunmen. Mohamed described them as ''young men, about between maybe 18 and 19,'' and of Somali or Arab origin.

PhuketWATCH Daily Media Wrap

PHUKET: The daily wrap of Thailand news, with a Phuket perspective, plus relevant reports from national and international media. Beware of inconsistent imitations.

reuters More than 600,000 Thais have been affected by flooding since July and more than a quarter of Thailand's provinces have been inundated, prompting officials to issue landslide warnings and begin evacuation measures. Rain and northern waters are both flowing into the Central Plains, with isolated floods such as in Kabin Buri - and while authorities say Bangkok is safely high and dry, there's a scramble to protect the nearby industrial estates of Ayutthaya and Pathum Thani provinces.

afp Singapore announced tighter rules on the hiring of foreign professional workers, saying companies will from next year have to show proof they first tried to recruit local citizens. The change, taking effect in August 2014, follows protests and online complaints about the large number of foreigners in the affluent city-state.

Phuket People: Rihanna Wrap Rihanna stopped to cuddle a cute furry primate, and her Instagram picture sent the Indonesian police into a frenzy. [Ed: Yes, the Las Vegas Guardian got the country wrong.]

Associate Press On the same night, she tweeted a few unprintable comments about what she apparently witnessed at an adult show in one of Phuket's red-light districts. [Ed: The coyness of AP in failing to report Rihanna's tweets meant that people around the world learned of the poor treatment of slow lorises on Phuket but remained ignorant of how women are demeaned. Why sanitise news?] Rihanna observed more wildlife on Phuket, tweeting a series of reports after viewing ''bizarre'' sex shows, and even using an ''Only in Thailand'' hashtag. (Children should stop reading here and move swiftly on to the comics page.) ''Either I was phuck wasted last night,'' the polite young lady wrote, ''or I saw a Thai woman pull a live bird, 2 turtles, razors, shoot darts and ping pong, all out of her pu$$y.'' It seems Rihanna just couldn't stay out of trouble during her brief trip to Thailand. First she posed with an illegal street vendor's endangered primate and now she's raised eyebrows further after a night out at an eye-popping sex club in the party island of Phuket. Worst still, she documented her X-rated evening with a series of vulgar tweets. It was brilliant. Within 24 hours of being photographed with a slow loris, and dispatching various pictures of her bum and other bits of anatomy on Instagram, Phuket's finest police sleuths leapt into action and arrested two Thai illegal wildlife handlers. And what about that poor bird and the two turtles that were dwelling inside a female performing in what was described as a 'ping pong' show? Islamist militants who have killed at least 62 people in a Nairobi shopping centre are reported to be ''running and hiding'' in stores as security forces close in. Kenyan police said three terrorists had been killed and others were injured after the military launched a major assault. Entertainer Rolf Harris, 83, has appeared in court charged with nine counts of indecent assault and four of making indecent images of children. He was bailed and his case was referred to Southwark Crown Court on October 7. Asia Atlantic Airlines Co, a new charter carrier, believes there is still room for this business to grow in Thailand. Opportunities for the airline are expected to arise because some secondary cities in Thailand, especially Phuket, are also tourism destinations. Flights from China or Japan to Phuket could be offered. The former Communist Party of Malaya leader, Chin Peng, who led a bloody insurgency against British colonial rule in the 1940s and 50s, was cremated in Bangkok.

afp BlackBerry announced it has agreed to a $4.7 billion buyout by a consortium of investors who plan to take the struggling Canadian smartphone maker private. Airlines rushed to clear a backlog of passengers stranded at Hong Kong's airport as a result of Typhoon Usagi as mainland authorities said at least 25 people had been killed in the storm, the strongest to hit eastern Guangdong in 40 years. Scientists are meeting this week to prepare the strongest warning yet that climate change is man-made and will cause more heat waves, droughts and floods this century unless governments take action.

AP One of the imprisoned members of Russian punk group Pussy Riot says she is beginning a hunger strike to protest harsh working conditions and threats to her life. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova is serving a two-year sentence for hooliganism. Berlusconi sought to amuse Mr Drago, the magistrate, by discussing the TV showgirls who attended his parties, joking that of 100 showgirls who were asked, ''Would you happily go to dinner with President Berlusconi?''' 76 said yes immediately, while the other 24 had already been his guest. Every human being has the right to live in his birthplace irrespective of religion, color and race. But in case of Rohingyas in Myanmar, it is different and difficult. Rohingya have been living in the state of Arakan in Myanmar since the 8th century, but have not been recognised as citizens. Paris Fashion Week kicks off next week with the industry on the defensive following a blistering attack by Iman and Naomi Campbell over the lack of black faces on the catwalks. They named dozens of labels they considered to be most at fault including Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Marc Jacobs. Can't decide between Koh Samui and Phuket? The good thing is that this is also the low season for hotels so there are some very sharp deals available over the wet season in Phuket.

Phuket World Sports Wrap After winning the world's ladies badminton title last month, Thailand notched up another sporting victory Saturday by winning the Asian women's volleyball championship, defeating Japan in three straight sets in front of a raucous home crowd in Nakhon Ratchasima.
