Interesting how even large and reputable news agencies like afp can get their facts wrong.

The Asiana flight did not overrun the runway, it touched down 330m short and off the centerline, ploughed through an antenna array, spun around 180 degrees and stopped 1500m down the runway.

An accident eerily similar to the Asiana crash at SFO less than 2y ago.

Editor Comment:

We've seen photos of the aircraft on grass, Herbert. It definitely did not stop on the runway.

AP reports: ''Authorities are investigating initial reports that the Airbus A320 may have hit an object on the runway during landing, causing damage to the rear of its body and the cover of the engine on the left wing, the ministry said.

''Video of the scene showed the aircraft's body turned around, with its nose pointing in the direction that the plane had come from.''

I'd rely on photographic evidence. Perhaps for once, your usual reliable source is confused.

@ Ed

Please read it more carefully

"touched down about 330 meters short of the runway threshold, the tail struck the ground, the aircraft broke through the localizer antenna, skidded down to the right of the runway turning 180 degrees around in the process and came to a stop about 1500 meters past the runway threshold and about 145 meters to the right of the runway center line on soft ground"

Equally I said "down the runway", not "on the runway" to emphasize the fact it was just about halfway down and nowhere near overrunning the runway.

afp says it overran the runway. It did not. It was nowhere near the end of the runway.

Having made it to the runway and then ending up off the runway within the length of the runway is called a runway excursion.

There's grass not just at the end of runways, dear Ed.

Editor Comment:

Don't worry too much about the grammar, Herbert. AFP is definitely not wrong. The aircraft is not on the runway. Semantics won't save you.

gravatar

It's neither semantics nor grammar. It's aviation terminology which afp got wrong.

Overrun means running off the end of the runway, which is not what happened here.

It was a runway excursion terminating on soft ground.

Yes, a runway excursion can also happen with the aircraft being able to return to the runway and even continue to taxi off the runway unassisted.

Neither you nor afp seem to understand the difference.

By all means don't take my word for it. Just do your own research and get the facts right.

Posted by Herbert on April 15, 2015 10:38

Editor Comment:

To use precise terminology, I would call that soft ground or perhaps even grass, Herbert. I found no mention of either in your initial comment:

''The Asiana flight did not overrun the runway, it touched down 330m short and off the centerline, ploughed through an antenna array, spun around 180 degrees and stopped 1500m down the runway.''

Er, not right, Herbert.

Ed Your ignorance of the terminology being used could not be more glaring. Herbert was perfectly clear in his first statement only you could find fault in it. The better man is not always the one taking the last word.

Editor Comment:

I can read, mike. Perhaps you can't. I understand the point Herbert was trying to make. But in condensing the AvHerald, he made a factual blunder - just as you have now in accusing me of getting it wrong.
Do your research, please. Don't waste my time, and the time of readers. Carpers and harpers are even less bearable when they can't read.

@ Ed

Your inability to admit you were wrong is, quite frankly, astonishing.

Fortunately it's also rather entertaining :)

Posted by Herbert on April 15, 2015 12:18

Editor Comment:

You attempted to point-score with AFP but blundered yet again, Herbert, as all readers can see from the photo. I'm an innocent bystander. But I can tell runway from grass - and right from wrong. Best stop wasting the time of intelligent readers.

gravatar

Indeed.

Everyone can see the airplane is nowhere near the end of the runway and thus did not overrun the runway, as claimed by afp.

I'm sure you can tell runway from grass but you surely cannot tell the difference between a runway overrun and excursion.

I've tried to explain the difference to you like to a 5y old. I can do no more.

Posted by Herbert on April 15, 2015 12:56

Editor Comment:

You are a petty point-scorer, Herbert, but readers who follow this thread will note that you can't even get that right.

You're a failed petty point-scorer. Add value, please, or stop wasting my time.

gravatar

Nice one.

When you can't win by reason and don't have the backbone to admit being wrong, you resort to name calling.

I corrected the factual error by afp (not by PW) and explained the difference. Ad nauseam.

I also added a link to a reliable source of in-depth information of the accident for those interested.

I'd say that's adding plenty value.

Posted by Herbert on April 15, 2015 13:12

Editor Comment:

You did not correct the factual error made by AFP. You made a much bigger blunder in saying the plane ''stopped 1500m down the runway''. As the photo shows, the aircraft is nowhere near the runway. But as usual, unlike me, you don't admit your errors.

gravatar

Another loss of control of a plane due to the pilot being on grass!

As I said, semantics won't save you. What you wrote is factually foolish, flawed, just plain wrong. Far,far more out of whack than AFP.

Wonderful news that Phuket has been free of road fatalities this songkran, well done everyone for making the effort to be careful and stay alive. Really good news

As for the "handbag bickering" between the Ed and readers regarding the plane, all I can say (like the road news) that it's great no one was killed there as well. Bloody glad I wasn't on the plane, must have been a buttock clenching ride !!
