Well, well, finally that trafficking and slavery accused Lt General 'surrendered' himself.
Why is the thai police always sitting on her hands waiting for 'surrender' instead of going out and arrest the culprit at his home/office if there is a arrest warrant? Why waiting for 'surrender' and giving the person some days chance to destroy evidence? Quite strange, right?

Dear Ed

Manat Kongpan (aka Manus Kongpan) is a Lt General not a lower ranking Major General as initially reported on Phuketwan. ( I note that Khun Chutima had been told by a senior police officer that Manat was a Major General)

I refer your attention to the report in the Asian Correspondent on 3 June 2015 with a picture of Khun Manat turning himself in at the police headquarters in Bangkok. He is wearing the uniform of a three star Lt General and not the two stars of a Major General.

There is a very significant inaccuracy in the Asian Correspondent story that needs to be highlighted. It is a defect that has been printed and reprinted by many newspapers and by NGOs. Reporters have failed to check their stories against your original article of 17 July 2013. Your original story can still be viewed on Phuketwan.

The 41-word paragraph over which you are being charged does not name the Royal Thai Navy! The paragraph refers to "Thai naval forces". The Reuters story of that day used that vague term to include maritime police and militia commanders.

Far too many stories are circulating that falsely state that the paragraph pointed the finger at the Royal Thai Navy. The latest story from Asian Correspondent incorrectly referred to "navy officials."

It is very lazy paraphrasing. It is wrong. It is just as negligent as the defective translation used by the Navy in which the term "Thai naval forces" was incorrectly translated to "Royal Thai Navy"!

If the Navy wishes to charge anyone with defamation the translation must be spot on. Defamation is all about the actual words used.

The human rights activists who speak up in your defence also need to get their words right or they can do more harm than good. The journalists who report the story of the defamation action really need to lift their game and cease copying past errors.

I confirm that in the last few days I posted a message on this site advising that Manus (Manat) Kongpan had been referred to by the Sydney Morning Herald and by foxnews as a Thai navy captain. (See January 2009) This provides a possible explanation of the Reuters report of December 2013 that pointed a finger at the Navy.

Hi Ed

I should point out that maritime police was a term referred to in the Reuters article of 5 December 2013, part of the series of Reuters articles on the Rohingya.

Manat (aka Manus aka Manas) Kongpan appears in many news articles on the net in 2004, 2009 and in more recent years. Readers can go looking for them but they might also be interested to read an article that pieces some earlier stories together.

Some stories relate to push backs and others to the deadly end to a siege at a mosque.
