Commander Major General Pachara Boonyasit warns bad police

Phuket's Bad Police Warned By Commander: Laws Apply to All

Friday, December 12, 2014
PHUKET: Police Commander Major General Pachara Boonyasit warned officers yesterday that they will be expected to obey the law, just like everyone else.

''I first heard talk about bad police on Phuket when I came to the island to help with the secret investigation of Karon taxi drivers,'' he said. ''We have to support good police and enforce the laws against bad police.''

Commander Pachara, who has impressed with a series of crackdowns on drugs and weapons, as well as quick arrests in keynote cases, said there were both good and bad police on Phuket.

''Police are expected to be of exceptional behavior around the clock and we will provide support to any officer in need,'' he said. ''Our aim is to ensure that all officers perform up to their ability on Phuket.''

He raised two specific cases where allegations had been made recently against police. In the first instance, friends of a man who suffered a fractured skull near a checkpoint accused officers of wielding a baton.

''The case hasn't been proven,'' the commander said. ''The officer wasn't carrying a baton and the evidence of Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation staff indicates the man most likely crashed his motorcycle near the checkpoint.''

Police were still awaiting the results of drug tests on the man, the commander said.

He added that another man who complained about a police raid on his home had opted to go to court on fraud charges the following day.

Police have raided more than 200 homes recently in pursuit of Phuket's drugs network leaders.

''By undertaking this operation with the Army, we have access to homes under military law without the need for first asking courts for search warrants,'' he said. ''We are acting within the existing laws.''

Gambling remained a problem on Phuket but not on the large scale claimed by some Bangkok lobbyists from time to time, the commander said.

Splendid, this Police Commander is great in encouraging his officers who want to do a good police job in order to improve the image of the police force on Phuket. Perhaps Major General Pachara can give 5 minutes of his time to the 'black police spot' on Patak Road in Chalong? It is just 500 meters where bars in resendential areas keep people who live there out there sleep till after 04:00 AM. (it is the area where a chalong police officer last May at 04:00 AM killed a working bar waitress with his police gun. ( forensicly proven).

The fight against corruption starts with the police and the judiciary.
If they are corrupt, nothing will ever change.
Nobody will be arrested if money is taken to look the other way.

At same time Police Commander General Pachara can order his staff to investigate how it is possible that at NaiHarn, just before All Season Inn Hotel is again a illegal taxi/tuktuk stand, complete with sleeping beds, tapped electricity for their tv, and putting markers on the public road were they not allow any other people to park!

@ Kurt- the taxi stands are reappearing all over the island. Have a look outside the Novotel in Kamala- its a well built bunker half hidden in the trees. Contraty to some observations vendors are returning to the beaches as well. Prominenlty displayed on the beach in Kamal not 30 minutes ago were 3 signs advertising longtails and at least 4 massages and a juice stall have set up on the beach side of the sidewalk.

The police are not interested in sorting these things out as it upsets the balance- they will wait for the Army to come in again and plead it was nothing to do with them.

Notable that he did not comment on possible (!) corruption within the police ranks- I guess its not a priority.

Funny that there is no mention about the allegations of Chalong police officers demanding bribes from Dive Instructors, despite it's publicity.

Considering it took place at the police station, it's about as clear a case of Bad Police as one can expect.

Got stopped for 'speeding' passing through Bangkok - on the spot fine 1,000 baht with receipt or 500 baht fine without receipt - work it out! Of course you could go to the police station & contest it if you were so inclined to waste several hours or days. It's not just Phuket, it's endemic, or maybe a re-assigned Phuket policeman?

Commander Pachara,

Please allow me to recommend me you some other article and mention us readers/Phuketwan a way not to address you directly but most important safely secured. After One "beating" and a serious hospitalisation Caused by a "High-So" guy witnessed/observed by Your staff without reason but "approved" by your staff I'm not so "eager" to talk anymore. I hope you have understanding for this. HOSPITAL bills & more evidence can confirm my bills. Regretfully local wittnessed are feared to testify. And some paperwork has been "alterned" to GET admission into my preferred hospital.

I do hope PW to copy my mentioned reference. If not read today's headlines from the PW. Describing "Bangkok police" situations published yesterday/today.

@Mister Ree

Have you noticed that all recent Army pushes were targeted only against local councils and similar organizations ..?
As you rightly mentioned not against other branches of power, like police...

They have their priorities all mixed up. More interested in chaining motorbikes for parking then protecting pedestrians. No one cares or knows who has the right of way !
