France and friends celebrated at Royal Phawadee Village in Patong

Phuket's French Community Have Plenty to Celebrate

Sunday, July 15, 2012
PHUKET: The French always celebrate July 14 with verve and on Phuket with plenty of wine and good food as well.

Having been in Paris for the election victory of Francois Hollande earlier this year, it seemed appropriate last night to drop by Royal Phawadee Village in Patong for the annual National Day party.

Whether it was the election result or the wine, food and good company we couldn't say, but there were broad smiles all round.

One of the subtle but effect inroads being made by the French on Phuket is through Alliance Francaise, the informational and cultural organisation that has already helped 600 people to learn French.

Sadly, two of the best French products - wine and cheese - are both subjected to luxury taxes in Thailand.

But that doesn't seem to stop French tourists from coming, and with a new, positive outlook, that probably will not change.

Next year should be special. There will be the regular National Day celebration on July 14, followed by the 30th birthday of Alliance Francaise just a week later.

We can hardly wait.

For those who can't hold out until 2013, more information about Alliance Francaise can be obtained from its Phuket Town office on 076 222988.

stephen - not always 'good fun' when they occupied the provinces of Trat and Chanthaburi in 1893 they made few friends; each year commemorative services are held here celebrating their departure early 1900s. 'Kuk khi kai' (chicken dung prison) at Laem Sing has been kept as a reminder of those jolly days, a prison with grates for roofing where they kept their poultry to defecate on Thai prisoners below.
Loads of fun, as were most attempted colonisations. Great job they did in Cambodia and Vietnam.

@ stephen

Ask the Americans and you may get a somewhat different opinion.

Personally I don't put much weight in their opinons but being European and having driven criss cross France and Europe countless times I have to say it's a stunningly beautiful country with food and wine to die for.

However when it comes to people, quite a few are unfriendly or downright rude, especially if your attempts to speak French are not spot on.

I could never quite understand why.
