A dense haze covers Phuket today but forecasters say 'don't worry'

Phuket Vanishes Under Haze That Will Blow Away - But Don't Hold Your Breath

Friday, September 18, 2015
PHUKET: Meteorologists say the amazingly thick haze over Phuket today is the result of an atmospheric inversion, and that the risky smoke particles are being held above-ground so don't pose a threat to health. The inversion should blow away in two or three days, they say.

Over here on the east coast it is the same. Dark and gloomy.

In Singapore the Government and medical authorities do worry.
In Kuala Lumpur the Government and medical authorities are worried.
But in Phuket " Don't worry".

" risky smoke particles are being held above-ground so don't pose a threat to health". Of course they are above ground otherwise there wouldn't be a haze! So since they are, how come this isn't a health hazard?

If the particles are all high why is it cloudy at ground level, not to worry we are told these are safe particles? Hhhhmmmm up to you!

@ Kurt - The "farang" countries you mention Kurt must have misunderstood the particles, these are Thai particles so are safe! Ed, when you say meteorologists do they have any qualifications?

@ Misunderstanding

Singapore and Malaysia are not "farang" countries. They are Asian.

You obviously do not know what the word means or refers to.

@Herbert - suggest you ask a Thai - all non Thai are farangs whether they are any Caucasian or nationality. Know your facts Herbie!

Editor Comment:

Not true, Misunderstanding. Farang applies only to Caucasians. There are specific words for other Asians. But it's not an insult - although it can be used as one. The context usually explains the use of the word.

@ Misunderstanding

You certainly picked a befitting alias.

When you actually speak Thai, you don't need to ask a Thai.

Farang is also Thai for Guava, known for it's white flesh. It's quite often used to identify items (usually food) not indigenous to Thailand like Potato - Man Farang, Aspargus - Noo Mai Farang and even Chewing Gum - Mak Farang.

As any phrase indicating race, it can also be used in a derogatory way but to pick that up you need to be able to speak and understand Thai. Happens a lot more here on Phuket than elsewhere in Thailand.

Some say it originates from the Thai word for French - Faranset, which were more or less the first Caucasians coming to contact with the that time Siamese.

FYI the Thai word for Foreigner is Chau Tanchat.

Your apology is accepted.

@ MissU

You not joke ?

You are only digging a deeper hole for yourself but it's quite entertaining.

Please teach us more about Thai language.

BTW, it Ma Nee, not Monee. Ma, depending on the pronunciation, can mean several different things like come, dog or horse.

Since you are so keen on asking Thais, ask them to say in Thai " The dog came to see the horse " or " Who is selling chicken eggs "

Who knows, you might learn a thing or two, though I doubt it.

Are Ma Nee and money so different if you look at all the accents of how people speak English. All I can say is when my lovely money sucker - cough ex girlfriend said them they both sounded the same. Glad I finished with her. My experience of Thais is you give them money they love you, end of really.
