Phuket Underpasses Win Government Green Light

Tuesday, October 18, 2011
PHUKET: Funding for underpasses at two key Phuket intersections is being sought by the Phuket Highways Department as debate continues about the suitability of overpasses at other Phuket intersections.

The two 600-metre long underpasses would smooth the flow of traffic on Phuket's Bypass Road across the busy junctions at the Central shopping centre and Tesco-Lotus crossings.

Confirming the plan today, Phuket Highways chief Arun Saneeh told Phuketwan that while no timetable was in place, Cabinet had initially approved the 600 million budget for the Central (Thainaan) underpass.

Another round of Cabinet discussion was likey to grant approval before 2012, he said - providing there was no delay or diversion of budget funds caused by the recent floods.

The Tesco-Lotus underpass will take a little longer, Khun Arun said.

Earlier this year a group of business leaders on Phuket rejected three different kinds of overpasses suggested by Bangkok authorities for the Bypass Road-Thepkasattri Road t-junction.

Overpasses were inappropriate for a seaside tourism destination where visitors were anxious to avoid obvious indications that they were simply holidaying in another city, that meeting heard.

The concept of a tunnel through Phuket's Patong Hill, linking Phuket's east and west more efficiently, is still under consideration.

So is a cheap and effective public transport system for the entire island. Phuket's roads will inevitably become more and more crowded as long as there is no public transport strategy.

At present, local taxis and tuk-tuks monopolise movement along Phuket's popular west coast, demanding fares that are six times what visitors pay in Bangkok and forcing all Phuket residents to buy their own motorcycles and four-wheel vehicles.

tesco junction has been flooded on the kathu side for the whole of last week..
where do they propose the water from the underpass should flow to??
Again all this will do is move traffic to the next bottleneck faster!!

Another idea that will just be flooded with water every time the monsoons hit, then you will be on the top road like before. Just put a cop with a whistle in the intersection and they can keep the traffic flowing during peak times.

another steve, this is because they have built a river next to the Royal Place condo that simply dumps all the water on the road. I couldn't believe it. I just went away to Bangkok for 1 month and on returning today (I live at Royal Place) I saw a new river between the condo and the road running in what used to be just a marshy hollow area. They have engineered this river in the past month (it's not just due to heavy rains) because they have clearly created raised embankments and hollowed out the river much deeper in the middle where the low-lying marsh area used to be. The problem is the water is flowing down this river quite fast and has nowhere to flow to on reaching the road except overflowing its banks and flooding the road. I cannot believe the stupidity of these civil works.

Let's get real and fix more than just the center or the islands problem. Along with these overpasses you would need an intersection at the four lane road by the Honda showroom and an elevated road at the other end passing the university connecting with the traffic going south from Katu to avoid the Central intersection altogether. Then you need a Passover in place of Chalong circle. You also need a road directly from Patong to Chalong until you complete all of these you will just be pushing one traffic problem from place to place and solving nothing. Or you can add more highways to divide up the island lowering the need to go through these intersections at all along with what I mentioned above add a bypass road from near the British international school Katu and the new Patong Tunnel connecting also with the road leading to the Honda intersection. Your not going to lower the number of cars on Phuket so you need to learn how to deal with them.

Passover? Do we have to pray to get a decent highway now? Yes, a strategy for public transport and reducing the number of vehicles on Phuket roads would be a good start.

Another desperately needed underpass is the one at the monument. With the right construction and good drainage this would alleviate the task of going round an oblong structure that wasn't designed for the number of traffic passing round it. At the moment, traffic in the morning and evenings is diverted to u-turns causing more traffic to build up. C'mon Phuket . . . you need to get this issue sorted out, otherwise it's more traffic jams and delays for the future.

Yes, the work of turning Phuket into Bangkok with a beach is not yet complete. Get your act together and build all the overpasses, underpasses, tunnels and rail links before 2015 so that Phuket can finally become just like Bangkok except three times more expensive than Bangkok for everything.

Underpass at Lotus intersection hahaha! look at google map, there are ponds/lakes all around. Water table is so high there's no where for it to go! Drain bpai na! I suppose the contractor can get extra work after it floods to design and build an alternate!
