UPDATING All Day, Every Day

VOLUNTEER divers and officials are to meet at the southern end of Karon beach from 8.40am on Monday to clear a cache of trash from the ocean floor. Environmentalists have warned that dumping in the sea must be halted to protect nature and tourism.

Original Report

PHUKET: Discovery of a burial ground of sunken trash off Karon beach - once rated among the best in the world - means Phuket's offshore pollution is likely to grow worse, environmental activist Dr Thon Thamrongnawasawat said today.

''Thailand is one of five countries in the world that does not prevent garbage being dumped at sea,'' he posted on Facebook.

''Without a plan there can be no strategy to protect Thailand's undersea environment.''

Video footage taken by Visit Chouncchit shows the underwater garbage dump extending across hundreds of square metres off Karon.

Although local officials were at pains to point to others being responsible, Dr Thon said: ''This garbage comes from the local community and development on the island. The problem on Phuket is growing.''

The garbage lies about 50 metres offshore and six metres deep.

Divers from the Phuket Marine Biological Centre collected 100 kilos of trash yesterday and hope the rest can be cleared rather than renewed.

Dr Thon has been fighting a strong campaign to make sure that money paid by tourists to visit Phi Phi and other marine parks is spent on maintaining and protecting the environment.

He has produced figures showing that over the years, billions of baht in takings have mysteriously vanished.

In a surprise development today, Siam Bay at Koh Racha off Phuket was listed as one of 21 new national parks. It's a popular snorkelling and diving spot and a controversial resort sits on the bay.

People on other parts of Racha were surprised by the park declaration.

''Government officers haven't come to talk with us,'' they said.

I'm almost at a loss for words, but despicable comes to mind. This just provides testimony to my assertion that Thai officials are utterly incapable of any kind of resource management. To allow something like this to happen is irresponsible, but to allow it to continue is nothing short of criminal.

Ed, I'm not a doomsayer, only a retired roadworker. But if the goverment and the lokal administration don't see where this is leading,They don't have to vorry about sunbeds and parasol's on Phuket's beaches. No one like to swim in a pool of trash. It's so bad and I'm leaving this spring to Phatthalung. Around my house there is no trash because I take care of it myself and my neightbours know it.

Going around everydays by MTB in any parts of this Iland I can say that the future is much worst than I could imagine only 2 years ago. All free lands (without fence) are disappearing and all the jungle is under attack: no hope for birds and animals, no hope for untouched water coming from the mountains.non wants to take care..

The out of sight out of mind no problem, this demonstrates how starkly evident it is Phuket has a huge primitive infrastructure problem that it cant cope with its service and disposal of garbage Phuket is too top heavy with resorts etc. for the primitive infrastructures holding it all together one incinerator is the best they can do and that's a poor disposal method by todays standards with a mountainous backlog of garbage someone found a short term solution in the Bankok canal style which are poisonous polluted cesspools with this mentality they will doom the place to yesterday's holiday island.

A friend of mine visited here a year ago, his previous visit was pre 2000.
He predicted the island has 10 years before its finished due to no enforceable control on building, deforestation and polution on whats going into the canals and inevitably going into the sea.
Of course you expect islands that appeal to tourists to develope but in Phuket there is no law and no control. The only law is profit and live for today and if the environment long term suffers then that's someone else's problem, so sad but inevitable with the mindset here.
During my time in Thailand i have seen locals dump rubbish out of train windows, beaches resembling bottlebanks and islands with garbage dumps strewn all over the place ( ko Libong) its evident in so many places in Thailand and its not the tourists who are doing it !. The Thai people really need to realise what they are doing and get some responsibility to save their lovely country.

In all fairness, I think much of the trash on the sea bed off shore, may come as a result of the 2004 Tsunami. I do know that this is the case in Phi Phi where Anchoring in Tonsai bay can be difficult due to this lingering problem. Just a thought.

Editor Comment:

One would have thought, being so close to the beach, the trash would have been spotted before now if it was from 2004. Sea cleanups were undertaken all along the Andaman coast after the tsunami. But you could be right. Karon beach, though, had sandhills in 2004 that prevented the big waves penetrating. The impact at all Phuket beaches varied, depending on the shape of the bays. Could trash from Patong be carried to this spot? Possibly.
