Cultural breach by fans at the New year party on Patong beach

Phuket Tourist Leaders Condemn NY Party And Tell Governor, 'Never Again'

Friday, January 4, 2013
PHUKET: The organisers of Phuket's private-for-profit two-day New Year party dug a hole in the beach to bury the garbage, Phuket Governor Maitree Inthusud was told today by leading Phuket tourism officials.

Women danced topless, one partygoer almost drowned and alcohol was sold on Patong beach at excessive prices in defiance of the agreement with authorities, they said.

''This kind of event is not in the short-term or long-term interests of Phuket's future for tourism,'' a letter from the group informed Governor Maitree.

Delivering the letter today at Phuket Provincial Hall in Phuket City were Ponganan Suwannakarn, President of the Phuket Tourist Association, PTA Vice president Sarayuth Mallam, and President of the Thai Hotels Association (Southern Chapter), Suchart Hirankanokkul.

Khun Ponganan said before going into the meeting: ''We wanted the governor to fully understand this event and the consequences for Phuket if there are other events like it.

''The New Year event was like a mobile pub and attracted the wrong kind of people, lowering the impression of Phuket as an environmentally-sensitive destination.

''We don't want Phuket to be taken down-market. We want to attract quality tourists who come for the region's natural beauty.''

With the letter were scores of photographs, showing breaches of the 15-point code that the organisers, Sydictive Element, agreed to follow.

The photographs were in stark contrast to the publicity shots being circulated on behalf of the event's organisers.

The only reason the party eventually won the approval of Phuket authorities at the last minute was because the authorities were told an important VIP planned to attend.

There was no VIP and only a small fraction of the 50,000 audience the organisers hoped to attract. Most of the big-name international stars touted as appearing failed to show up.

Scaffolding and other equipment left after the event still littered Patong beach on January 2, the letter told the governor.

The man who almost drowned was dragged from the surf not by a lifeguard but by a friend, according to the officials.

At least one woman stripped to her bikini bottom to dance, in contravention with the rules governing the event.

Alcohol was not supposed to be sold but was openly being offered to partygoers at excessive prices.

Khun Sarayuth said: ''This event should not have been held anywhere on Phuket.''

Khun Ponganan added that the event had turned Phuket ''into a slum'' overnight. ''There is no benefit to Phuket from this event or others like it.''

Patong police had to field many complaints from hotel guests about the noise, he said.

The ''electronic dance music festival'' was announced by celebrity Paris Hilton in Bangkok on October 22 and transferred at the last minute from Surin beach to Patong beach after objections.

Glad to hear there's been some follow-up checks and public statements by officials about this fiasco. Though really it's just wrong that members of business groups need to be holding govt officials to task over this -- that the party was a bad idea seemed obvious to everyone but those supposedly in charge of protecting the public's interests. Sydictive's been actively scrubbing clean all the critical comments by disappointed punters on its Facebook page, but I think the gig is up!

All that is being pointed out now, after the event was blatantly obvious from the get go and moreso on the evenings it all occurred...Why wasn't action taken there and then?..i wonder...

I totally agree with these community leaders. This event should never have been approved. And where were the police and other officials when things got out of hand and the 15 "rules" were totally ignored.
The organisers need to be held to account, fined heavily, and forced to repair the physical damage they have done to the island's most popular tourist beach, including digging up the garbage they buried there, and compensate those nearby hotels and businesses which suffered as a result of this fiasco.

I would be interested to know who the expected VIP was. And if the authorities who approved the event could be held to account. I doubt the latter... but accountability is something needed before corruption can be effectively tackled.

Of course you want that.

"Khun Ponganan added that the event had turned Phuket ''into a slum'' overnight"

Na, it's still only Patong. And that's only a drop in the barrel!

How many Thai ladies do you see on any beach in Phuket topless. Yet on Kata beach the foreigners are there every day. Why - there are very few signs, Thia ladies find it offensive so why is not is a Thai law that is enforced I am sure most tourists would still come. It is up to Thailand it is Thai soil but you cannot blame the tourists some might say the local council is so deparate for money they don't enforce the law.

It's laughable to read these things being said by these officials..EVERY night ladyboys show off their wares openly at the mouth of one of the sois on bangla rd, gogo-bars are everywhere and the whole centre of patong is about little else than bar girls, sex shows and open prostitution. On which planet do these clueless people live? What transpired was totally in sync with Patong as a destination.

NEVER AGAIN - well, at least until next year! Maybe if they'd been more vocal before the event instead of after they would appear credible. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to have known how this event would have turned out - just see the articles and comments in previous stories.

Gasp, evil female breasts were exposed!!
I'd think the trash and environmental concerns are the real issue, not a sexist more that many Euro tourists are going to ignore, or go elsewhere. Incidentally, I drove up from Malaysia last week and saw the banner signs for this event on the road, which were useless as one could not discern the location from the tiny print.

I think it was simply a marketing ploy, now we all know the name, Sin.., er, syndictive?
As for a" VIP " suddenly making it all alright - do we need any more proof that the law means nothing to officials?

''We don't want Phuket to be taken down-market. We want to attract quality tourists who come for the region's natural beauty.''

JOKE in capitals. Anyone who knew this island 15+ years ago weeps for the destruction that has been effected on this once beautiful island. It starts with the massive billboards in evidence when leaving the airport, the scars on the hillside, the congested roads, the endless building sites, the piles of rubbish hidden in various back road locations, etc, etc etc. Is this new breed of Russian tourist the 'quality tourist' aforementioned? There is no scenery; there are no quality tourists; authorities, remove your head from your proverbial or simply shut up.

The event sounds like it was a complete 'stuff' up.
But as for turning Patong into a slum ?!? I don't we can blame Synd. Elemt. for that ! Sounds pretty much like any other night of the week down Bangla, except surrounded by tin (and the owners of the exposed breats may have been a different nationality - and sex).
