The Russian man's motorcycle being examined last night after the crash

Phuket Tourist in Coma After Stray Truck Wheel Strikes Motorcycle

Thursday, February 7, 2013
PHUKET: A Russian tourist is in a coma and fighting for life in a Phuket hospital's intensive care unit after being struck by a wheel that broke loose from a truck yesterday.

The wheel was one of two that broke loose from the 10-wheel truck as it travelled at what police believe was excessive speed down Thepkasattri Road, Phuket's main north south artery.

Alexey Balabko, 26, was knocked out by one of the wheels as it crossed the median strip and collided with his motorcycle.

A second wheel crashed into a pickup, like Mr Balabko heading north from Phuket City towards the Sarasin Bridge.

The crash occurred in Phuket's Srisoonthorn district about 2.30pm. Mr Balabko remained in a coma today.

speeding is not the reason for wheels coming off,
loose tire screws dont care for speeding definitions, different anyway in every country

If you have ever seen a truck tire flying down the road on its own you would be doing a little more than wishing him to get better. They are so big and heavy, some of them are difficult for one person to stand up after they have fallen over when putting them on the truck, that one province in Canada instated a $50,000.00 fine for a first offense if it cant be proved a manufacturing fault. Simple checking of all lugs everyday stops these incidents dead in their tracks, if you excuse the pun.
