For Burmese Kin So, 38, a remarkable career ended abruptly in 2011 when his wife allegedly scarred him for life after an argument in Patong, on Phuket's west coast.
He went to the PR office at Phuket Provincial Hall in Phuket City today to begin the process he hopes will bring his wife to justice.
According to Kin So, he spent five years working in Singapore then established his own construction company on Phuket, doing well as the years passed until he had a large staff and many friends.
Kin So told the media today that he met a Burmese worker and fell in love with her. They had a son.
About one year later, he said, they had an argument after she was consistently out late. One day, after she had stayed out the previous night, he became angry, hit his wife and left.
Later, after going out with friends, he returned and fell asleep. He woke up when his face was splashed with acid.
''I was taken to Patong Hospital then transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City,'' he said. ''There, they told me my right eye was ruined.
''They transferred skin from my back to my face.''
Having spent the past two years recovering in Burma, he returned to Phuket to find all his friends had gone.
''I work as a painter and gardner now,'' he said. ''Fortunately I have an expat boss who understands what my life has been like.''
Kin So has been to the Kathu Police Station and hopes they are able to find his wife.
The man has my sympathies. Please consider in a land where married women are routinely abused by husbands with impudence, you'll get this kind of desperate revenge violence.
