A monsoon storm lashes Phang Nga, north of Phuket

Phuket Storm Weather Warning: Boats Less Than Nine Metres Confined to Shore

Monday, July 6, 2015
PHUKET: Boats of less than nine metres are banned from leaving the shores on Phuket today because of approaching stormy weather, the Chief of Marine Office 5, Phuripat Theerakulpisut, said today.

The message is an official Phuket warning that empowers Marine Office 5 to cancel the licence papers of any boat ''captain'' caught at sea in a boat less than nine metres.

Today's order sets a new precedent for dealing with stormy weather warnings for marine craft.

Further daily edicts are expected during the monsoon season as Khun Phuripat follows an order from Phuket Governor Nisit Jansomwong to make the region safe for tourists at sea.

Tourists are advised to question speedboat captains about whether conditions are safe.

Individuals have been known to flaunt the rules and put to sea because some tour agents are hesitant to refund cash on prepaid trips at this time of the year especially, when there are fewer customers.

Tourist are advised to ask speedboat captains about weather condition are safe. I was laughing reading that.
Speedboat captains are money making boatmen. Nothing more. To speedboat boatman it is always safe, as they are not disturbed by any Meteo knowledge.
Many of these speedboats, of play wood, are ok for lakes, but not for sea conditions around Phuket.

"Tourists are advised to question speedboat captains about whether conditions are safe".
This is the most stupid advise I have ever heard on Phuket. What do you think the captains will say? It's safe all right - money talks.

If you want to get on the boat without questioning the ''captain,'' RR, that's ok with me. I will fully understand.

The question should be 'whatever floats your boat'.

@ Mehboob, to Phi Phi are larger vessels. If vessel well maintained (!) it is safe to sail with them, you just can become sea sick.

First you were greg, now you're Jonno - and you still don't have anything of value to add.

Well well. Two days later, maybe the Chief of Marine Office 5 should have issued an ALL SHIPS Warning not to be at sea? Now we have the 68m x 12m 793-tonne Sinaran Andaman, wallowing in the waves at Ratcha. A missing fishing boat and a missing barge too? You will more reports by the weekend.
Just imagine for one minute what conditions at sea must be like for the Rohinghya people?
