Frenchman Riad Lahkin allegedly got upset over a mobile telephone

Phuket Store Holdup: Frenchman Nabbed as Suspect

Saturday, February 15, 2014
PHUKET: A Frenchman who pointed a pair of scissors at a cashier in a convenience store and fled with 2000 baht in a row about a mobile telephone was quickly arrested today by Phuket police.

The suspect, named by police as Riad Lahkin, 37, went to a 7-Eleven store in Sirirat Road, Patong, about 5.30am.

He told shop assistant Sunisa Mornlamai that he had bought a mobile telephone at the store for 1200 baht and it didn't work so he wanted his money back.

She said he'd have to wait for the manager to start work later in the day.

He left the shop, then returned a minute later, grabbed a pair of scissors from a display, and threatened her with them, police said.

She gave him 2000 baht, he fled and was arrested soon after at Lucky Mansion by patrol officers.

hopefully he will get a nice extended holiday here on Phuket and he can do a good tour of the penal system.

Not sure if I would call it a holdup. Seems like the guy just wanted his money back for faulty goods - obviously he took it too far. Unfortunately many sellers are happy to receive money without accepting any responsibility for the quality of their goods or services. Too often employees in Thailand are not allowed to make any decisions. If this lady is responsible for the shop, surely she should be allowed to give refunds on faulty merchandise.

Do the same thing anywhere in the world and get arrested. This has nothing to do with this tool wanting a refund it is all about his arrogance in thinking he could do something on holiday he would not do at home.

Re: Billy
"the trouble with Thailand" etc etc - another boring expat rant. Just walk away, make a mental note and continue to live your life in peace and happiness in a beautiful, warm, happy country, or go back home!

Billy, this lady is a shop assistant for a start. Secondly, I don't think anyone is right in using violence at any time. Thirdly, by looking at this mans name, I am quite sure he behaves the same way "at home" too . Unfortunately, Phuket is becoming full of these unsavory visitors!

@Elizabeth, I think the police, worldwide, would like to learn your technic, in determining how a person behaves, simple by their name.

Ed, it appears my eyes see one thing and my brain another then my fingers type something very different, of course technic should be technique.

No no, he's not French!

The guy has severe issues and his actions can't be justified, but if the shop assistant did the right thing and refunded the money for the faulty goods they sold him, then we wouldn't be reading this story.

@ Jake- it is a boring rant, but your go back home retort doesn't rank much higher. Many people have investments, commitments and make large contributions to Phuket, surely we are entitled to express our dissatisfaction at poor business practise.

@Elizabeth- yes I am aware she is the shop assistant and as she was left alone, I assume she is responsible for the shop. If not, don't leave her alone. Secondly, I agree that no one is right in using violence as I said he took it too far.
