Chaos as a retail stand crumbles and topples at HomeWorks today

UPDATE Phuket Shopper, Daughter Injured as Retail Stands Collapse Like Dominoes Inside HomeWorks

Sunday, December 7, 2014
PHUKET: A woman and her daughter have been admitted to hospital on Phuket after large retail stands collapsed inside the HomeWorks store opposite Central Festival Phuket today.

Witnesses said eight rows of stands collapsed, in a domino effect. Paint tins opened as they hit the floor, adding to the chaos.

Those who were admitted to Bangkok Hospital Phuket have been named as Patchari Boontalay, 35, and her daughter, Pichaya Seakin, 11.

The giant Central brand, which owns and operates HomeWorks, was saying little about the incident, except that it was unprecedented.

Detectives and store authorities were working to determine the cause.

Central stores were said to have been ordered to check safety arrangements in other outlets throughout Thailand.

The mother and her daughter were visiting the store with husband and father Biboon Seakin, 42, who was also injured, but not admitted to hospital.

The stands toppled about 4.30pm as shoppers crowded the store.

Police are investigating the cause of the collapse.

The store was closed while the investigation took place. Emergency vehicles initially blocked one entrance.

Anonymous,- Please write in English next time so we all can understand.

Lucky that only two persons become injured. Could actually become a very bad outcome when this kind of accident happen.

Glad everyone is reasoably OK - could have been nasty. A good job this happened at Homeworks - imagine the wailing and beating of chests had it been Supercheap (which is a pleasanter shopping experience post-fire).

@slickmelb: No need for that. This happens in other countries as well.On 21 November 2013, the roof of a shopping center in Riga, Latvia, collapsed.Killing 54 people, including three rescue workers. 41 were injured. In London, the ceiling collapsed at London's Apollo Theater. Injuring many. That's about a year ago.Nobody wants to have an accident like this. Not in a mall, or at a bungee place.
