PHUKET: Mystery surrounds the background of a German traveller who appears to have suffered a mental breakdown at Phuket International Airport.
The 45-year-old man first came to the attention of officials yesterday when he bought a couple of beers in an airport bar but did not pay. Tourist Police settled the tab.
Today he spent some time stretched out on the sofa in the Holiday Inn resort's sector and was heard saying: ''So sad, so sad'' in English.
The man, however, did not respond to people who spoke to him in English, so the presumption was made that he could be Russian.
Today officials at the airport called Kusoldharm Foundation Phuket paramedics who with police restrained and subdued the man.
It was discovered at Vachira Phuket Hospital that he was German, not Russian. In his possession was a purse containing the ID for a person who appeared to be a katoey ladyboy.
Authorities at the hospital were hoping to learn more about the man once he began behaving normally again.
