New Phuket signs warn motorists and riders of big penalties for offences

Phuket Purge of Traffic Offenders Spreads Across All of Phuket

Sunday, July 20, 2014
PHUKET: New signs at Phuket intersections warn motorists of penalties for traffic infringements as an island-wide crackdown on bad drivers and riders takes hold.

Minivans and trucks are now under orders to stick in the left lane, as is the safety code throughout the whole of Thailand. Penalties of 1000 baht are specified.

The national police focus on 199 key intersections - including three on Phuket - has been broadened to include a much wider surge to save lives on the holiday island.

Policemen are now on duty at times at intersections, not just controlling the traffic lights during peak periods but also booking offenders.

There's a special emphasis on lane-crossing, which Phuket police see as a cause of many vehicle-motorcycle and vehicle-vehicle crashes.

Speedsters and other offenders are being captured on security cameras and will be notified of fines through the post.

The latest police campaign is another initiative under the National Council for Peace and Order that demonstrates enforcement on Phuket is not only possible but highly desirable.

Clearing beaches, taming taxis, fixing traffic, ending parkland encroachment and preventing youth crime are all ticks on the list of improvements to Phuket under the military authorities, who took charge of Thailand on May 22.

The Army, Navy and police and have been especially active on the holiday island. Moves to wipe out corruption and to reduce the one million tonnes of trash at the Phuket incinerators are anticipated to follow shortly.

Great news but its a shame it took a coup to get the cops to do their jobs at last. With other sources of tea money drying up at the moment they are going hungry.

It would be interesting to check with the police about their records whether crime such as theft and robbery are on the rise as is usually the case when the usual sources of income are decreasing.

Editor Comment:

Possibly too early, Jakub. People are used to lower income each low season. Any trend may be a few weeks away. The crackdown on youngsters out after dark should help.

This particular campaign needs to be enforced the length of Thailand, sooner rather than later.

Does anyone know what the pay scale is in Thailand for the Police. I would assume that the higher ranked officers would be OK but what about the rank and file officers?

Wow police are being told to do their actual jobs. Well done army.
Next on the agenda is to remove TVs from the boxes.
Why should a person on duty be allowed to watch TV while working I will never understand.

Good
You have to bring order to this country. We do not like to "pay for nothing".
Stop crime, scam and "maffia". Remember - there are other countries with nice beaches, cheeper than Thailand - like Sri Lanka. Been there - will go again. Maybe I'll come back when you Thais stop with all your "tourisscam"

I hope that there is more police activity in Kamala and BangTao. Lorries and cement lorries just race through both towns at very high speeds. The other spot is Nackalay.
