A forensic detective checks the room in which the American was found

Phuket Police Probe Death of American Tourist in Resort Room

Saturday, February 9, 2013
PHUKET: Police are investigating the cause of death of a 23-year-old American whose body was found in his room at a resort in Phuket's Cherng Talay district last night.

The man arrived on Phuket with his brother on Tuesday. The brother left on Thursday, but the man decided to stay on.

Staff at the Residence Resort and Spa Retreat told Cherng Talay police that the man caught a taxi to Patong about 10pm on Thursday.

He returned about 6.30am the following day, and placed a 'Do Not Disturb' sign on his door.

At 10.30pm last night, staff knocked on the door and investigated, finding the man dead on his bed.

The television was still turned on and there were no signs of a disturbance, police said. A quantity of Valium was found in the room.

His body was taken to Thalang Hospital.

Amazing to see how many farang die in phuket since the 1 jan 2013 RIP

There's nothing ''amazing'' about it, Ratatoee. Just because the sun is shining and you're on a tropical holiday island doesn't mean you get to make bad lifestyle choices with no price to pay.

If the guy actually did consume the Valium found in the room, is taking some Valium a bad lifestyle choice that will result in death for a person who is just 23 years old?

People don't just die from taking Valium or even consuming a perfectly normal cocktail on an island.

Will this one be swept under the carpet by the Phuket authorities?

You seem to have made up your mind already, Glassy. Just as well that the investigators haven't. With so many unknown factors, guesswork is pointless. So is making assumptions.

there are too many deaths who are not clear. Sorry but that's not usual ...

Suggest to your honorary consul, mike, that Thailand needs an independent coronial system of investigation to match the quality of inquests in developed countries. There will always be flaws in a system where onlookers jump to false conclusions. It's up to the embassies (and the honorary consuls) to make sure the findings are as accurate as they can possibly be.

Have the Phuket forensic police latex gloves?

Sadly there is sufficient research to show that even a low dosage of valium combined with alcohol can be fatal.
http://www.livestrong.com/article/216529-side-effects-of-valium-alcohol/
Above link refers to this side effect.
Stating that taking Valium is not fatal ignores the fact that in combination with alcohol it can be deadly.

Nothing suggests that except guesswork and supposition, Arthur.

My mind isn't made up about the cause of death for this guy, there is a big question mark there, just like the Phi Phi sisters death and the guy with the large gash in the back of his head found floating in the water off Patong Beach.

My question is, will the Phuket authorities give a follow up about the true cause of this guys death, or will it be another unknown like the other 2 mentioned?

Posted by Glassy on February 10, 2013 07:19

Editor Comment:

Every death is as individual as a fingerprint, Glassy. A pathologist has ruled that the man found in the water at Patong died from drowning. For all you know, the cut could have been accidentally inflicted days earlier. In any event, the pathologist found no reason to associate it with the young man's death.

The case of the Phi Phi sisters remains a mystery because the Canadian embassy doesn't want information revealed. There's no way of knowing - thanks to Canada - whether the Krabi police have done their job. Feel free to make your point - to the Canadian embassy.

As detectives are still investigating the latest death, best wait until you hear the official version before jumping to false conclusions.

Guesswork from anonymous commenters has even less value than guesswork from those who take the trouble to add a name.

I'm well and truly over the thoughtless provocations of immature commenters, zim. If you have nothing to say that adds value to the issues being discussed, please cease wasting readers' time, and mine. Go play with your marbles instead.

you are such a coward. you won't even put up what i have to say because you are scared and know other readers feel the same. you do not behave like an editor but more like an egotistical maniac that derives pleasure from putting others down. i will no longer log onto this site and i know others will refrain from doing so too because you are pathetic. the fact that my comment has been moderated to the point that it says nothing but just has your tidbit of moaning shows readers just how pathetic you are. i'll just stick to phuket gazette from now on which generally has the same news you do, only about a day earlier. later loser...

What you think of me is of zero interest. I get no pleasure from wasting time on readers who have nothing to add. Clearly, zim, your misjudgements put you at the wrong end of every line.
