Phuket Police Ordered to Arrest Beach Thugs

Monday, January 10, 2011
THE FAMILY of a woman who was beaten up on a Phuket beach demanded justice at Phuket's administrative headquarters today and were promised the full support of a Vice Governor.

Sasithorn Thonglor waved a photograph of her sister Mhaiwadee as she and her father Sawang, 70, insisted that police properly investigate the beating last week at Surin beach, on Phuket's popular west coast.

Khun Sawang said that a week before the attack on his daughter, who was trying to work as a fruit vendor on the five-star beach, a shop had been burned down in another Surin dispute.

Vice Governor Wirawat Janpen placed a telephone call direct to the Superintendent of Cherng Talay police, insisting that the men responsible be pursued. He said he wanted a full report from the superintendent as soon as possible.

Called in quickly to attend the meeting with the family at Provincial Hall in Phuket City was the Director of Thalang District, Narunat Supatarapratheet.

Vice Governor Wirawat said he believed the men involved in beating Khun Mhaiwadee were ''not mafia'' but local beach thugs.

He told the Thalang Director that he wanted four courses of action implelemented:

..proper zoning on and around Surin beach to delineate areas for umbrellas, restaurants and parking;

..a check on allegations that a seafood restaurant sought and obtained illicit payments from all vendors operating on the beach;

..justice in the form of an arrest in the case involving Khun Mhaiwadee;

..better security at and around the beach to ensure the safety of all local residents and tourists.

Khun Mhaiwadee was still in Mission Hospital in Phuket City today. Phuketwan understands that police were interviewing her again this afternoon to gain more details about her assailants.

Khun Sasithorn and her father said they were happy with the Vice Governor's approach to the situation and looked forward to hearing more.

The men who beat up Khun Mhaiwadee in a daylight attack allegedly hit her with a chair, scattered her money and fruit across the sand, and told her that Surin was ''their beach.'' It was her third day working as a vendor.

As good as it is, that something may get done. The fundamental flaw is that it takes someone with some influence to persuade the police to actually do something.

Shouldn't the Police be doing this anyway? Sorry forgot where I was for a moment.

Great news. Under "Proper Zoning" - What about the newly arrived jet-skis that have also taken up a slice of Surin Beach - oil slicks and all?

Hope that the story will be followed till the End ... sad to see that the parents apparently have no confidence in the Police and instead feel they have to seek assistance from the the vice Governor .. Surin has been my favorite beach for many years, and though it has changed dramatically during the last 15 years, it still is. ;-)

I would like you to publish the name of the restaurant so I boycott it. I hope they are prosecuted to the full extent of the law and I wish Ms Maiwadee a full and speedy recovery

I understand from some Surin residents that their local mafia and/or beach thugs are renowned for being a less sophisticated lot than the better organised gangs that run other beaches on the island.

Sorry to hear that Khun Mhaiwadee fell victim to these scoundrels, and I certainly hope that justice is done. We'll just have to wait and see.

Yes, can we get the name of the business(es) these creeps were working for? It's time to boycott.

Thank you.

Why does it take a phone call from the vice governor, for the police to do what they are supposed to do?
