Phuket Police Hold Three Skim-Scam Suspects, Chase Fourth Russian

Friday, March 6, 2015
PHUKET: Police on Phuket are hunting a Russian they believe helped three other Russian suspects to try to skim-scam credit cards on Phuket.

The Russian, Vladimir Orlov, requested a new credit card reader for one of two shops he runs in Phuket's Karon district.

But once the credit card reader was installed, Kasikorn Bank officials began to notice unusual aspects of its use and called in Karon police.

Officers held three Russian men yesterday but Mr Orlov has yet to be apprehended.

In a backpack used the arrested men police found an assortment of 33 credit cards and other equipment. Transactions worth about 400,000 baht were halted by the bank.

Arrested by police yesterday were Stanislav Komarob, 34, Vitalii Korobkov, 39, and Panteley Akbash, 36. The three men deny any guilt.

Another Hub? Phuket and Thailand is becoming a hub for these skimmers. A few years of fish head soup with broken rice will have them thinking of a new career.

I have been living on Phuket for 5 years now. I never use creditcards when I'm shopping. Even TV at 35000 thb. Cash is the safest way to do shopping on this island.

5 of the last 7 visits, I have either been advised by my bank that my CC's are subject to unusual transactions and must be cancelled and reissued. On 2 occasions this was while still on the island and the remaining 3 upon returning home. None of these related to ATM's as the cards were only used to pay for accommodation and other services.
