Phuket's new Police Commander greets the Heroines last night

Phuket Police Commander Pauses to Pay Respects to Phuket Heroines

Sunday, September 30, 2012
PHUKET: The new Phuket Police Commander, Major General Chote Chawanwiwat, arrived on Phuket last night and paused to pay his respect at the Heroines Monument on the way to Phuket City.

Coming from a posting in Narathiwat, he starts work on Monday, replacing Major General Major General Chonsit Wadhnawarangkuh.

Major General Chonsit, on Phuket for little more than eight months, is to be Commissioner of Inspection Division 9, Office of the Inspector General, in Bangkok.

While Phuket has a new police commander, a new governor has yet to be appointed.

The political wrangling that held up Tuesday's announcement of Cabinet-approved governors for Phuket and other provinces appears to be over.

Deputy PM and Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit resigned on Friday, just as Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra returned from a visit to the UN in New York.

His resignation amid mounting pressure from factions in the ruling Pheu Thai Party clears the way for Cabinet on Tuesday to consider Khun Yongyuth's nominations as Interior Minister for governorships in provinces around the country.

Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha was due to fly off Phuket yesterday evening to begin life in retirement in Bangkok. Senior Vice Governor Dr Sommai Preechasin is acting governor until a replacement is appointed.
