Macaques on the Phuket City hill today: an animal lover fears poachers

Phuket Poachers Kidnap Baby Monkeys from Hillside Jungle, Says Animal Lover

Wednesday, July 29, 2015
PHUKET: Baby macaque monkeys are being stolen by a gang from a hilly sanctuary in Phuket City, says an animal lover.

The man, who jogs up Toh Sae hill - otherwise known as Monkey Hill - most days, says that earlier this month he saw a gang of men in a pickup attempting to poach young macaques.

''I believe the small monkeys would have value in being sold as pets or used by photo touts to take money from tourists,'' he said.

The animal lover has called for authorities to investigate whether the number of young monkeys is diminishing, as he believes.

Several hundred macaques are thought to inhabit jungle on the hill in large troops.

Signs on the hill warn tourists of the danger of being bitten if they feed the wild monkeys.

A neighboring Phuket City hill, Koh Rang, is even more popular with tourists and also home to troops of macaques.

Macaque can be very dangerous and very much doubt to be used as pets or by touts. Never seen them used for either purpose in twenty five years here.
Have heard of them being used in black magic though.

@ Michael, they are also used to climb coconut trees to retrieve coconuts. The owners have them on long leashes and many can be seen riding in salengs in the Pa Klok area.

Editor Comment:

Perhaps that's a more plain reason for poaching, Duncan.

young Macaques in other countries (eg Morocco) are often poached for entertainment and sale into the pet trade, then drugged and forced to perform or dressed up in clothes. visit mpcfoundation.org.uk for more info.

On this day in 1833 William Wilberforce died aged 73.

He founded the RSPCA and was a campaigner for the abolition of slavery.

Thailand certainly needs more people like him in the 21st century.

Duncan the monkey used for coconut picking is the pig tailed macaque not the long tailed macaque which is the type found on these hills there are no indigenous pig tailed macaques on phuket anymore

Obviously easy way to check is the tail as names suggests. The pig tail is also a stronger monkey
