Phuket Painter Suffers Severe Shock at Small Karon Hotel

Tuesday, November 18, 2014
PHUKET: Painter Jakkapol Limmui, 26, is being treated in Vachira Phuket Hospital in Phuket City for severe electrical burns after his metal pole and brush struck a high voltage line at a small hotel yesterday in Patak Road, not far from the Karon Circle.

A hotel with 146 rooms is in Thailand not a small hotel.

This is the 2nd similar accident in approx 1 week - luckily not fatal.

It is hardly surprising considering the jungle of wires & cables that exists on these poles. It never fails to amaze me how the various authorities seem to be able to manage to find the correct line to rectify faults. But clearly there are many faults not detected.

I remember I was staying in a resort in Patong and the taps in the shower became live. I called the security guard who thought it was a big joke and was laughing.

I went to see the manager and told her if it was a child who touched the taps they could well be dead as it was a real heavy shock. The indifference they showed was annoying given the potential danger. I just slightly touched the tap and if somebody had grabbed it fully they may have fried.

Drive along the 3rd road (behind Junceylon) in Patong and you will see that many of the new, curved light poles actually touch the high voltage lines. Only a thin layer of rubber stands between a major tragedy and with time the movement of the cables rubbing against the poles will definitely cause it to wear down.

It is absolute, sheer lunacy to install them this way but hey, mai pen rai.

AM, that used to be a common problem in many countries where they would use the incoming water pipes instead of an earth spike, however in your case this is probably caused by a small amount of current leakage through an appliance such as the element in a hot water system.

@Arun please finish the story did u pack up and move out immediately did you call your embassy did suddenly action take place when you packed your bags please advise, Phuket wan reported a story 2 years back brand new resort chap got out of pool placed his hand on brass? wall bannister electrocuted dead
there is no national electrical safety standard bad or no earthing abounds
safety switches for circuit breakers are
considered to be another expense a optional extra in Thailand and fit into the less seen species there are far too many electrocution incidents the powers that be take no action to introduce a electrical safety standard for what ever reason which defies logic.
