A sailor from the USS Ford signs on again on September 11

Phuket Marks 9/11 With a Welcome and Strong Memories

Monday, September 12, 2011
PHUKET: The US Navy League Southern Seaboard Council hosted a US Navy ship's welcome party at the Irish Times in Jungceylon on September 11 for the USS Ford (FFG 54) which dropped anchor off Phuket the previous day.

During the welcome party there was a pause and moment of silence for those lost on a significant date a decade ago in Pennsylvania, Washington DC, and New York City. For many countries this date signified the start of the war or terrorism commonly referred to as 9/11.

The moment of silence also was for all those in the armed forces fighting against terrorism and their sacrifice leading to all of those attending having their freedom and safety.

Brad Kenny of the US Navy League mentioned to all at the welcome party that earlier in the day, some 40 sailors from the US Navy ship USS Ford and the Royal Thai Navy 3rd Area Command accomplished a community service project together at a Phang Nga orphanage, the Home and Life Foundation.

At Home and Life the combined sailors from the US and Thailand moved by hand more than 15 tons of rock to form a gabion rock wall to recover land along a river bed and save several foundation buildings from eroding into the river.

Mr Kenny commented that both the US and Thai Navies were active in the fight against terrorists with the Thai Navy recently sending ships to engage pirates off the coast of Somalia and the US Navy to support the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Phuket will have up to three US Navy Ships visit during September. The USS Kidd (DDG 100) arrived on September 7 and departed yesterday, The USS Ford arrived September 10 for a five day visit.

And another US Navy ship will arrive before the end of the month. All US navy ships that visit do one or more Comserv or community service projects on a volunteer basis with the US Navy League Phuket organising the projects. Over the past five years The US Navy League and the Rotary Club of Patong Beach have coordinated 87 Comserv projects with the US Navy putting more than a million baht into various NGOs, charity foundations and school in and around Phuket.

Another project the US Navy has performed in Phuket many times is called Handclasp. Handclasp is the giving away of many types of products donated by US corporations to the US Navy.

The US Navy transports these products to the various ports that do community service projects and find NGOs, foundations, or orphanages for the donated goods. Many types of soaps, shampoos, first aid supplies, and personal hygiene products make up these Handclasp goods given away by the US Navy.
