PHUKET: A career criminal caught almost by chance on Phuket has blamed his mother-in-law for nagging him into a life as a thief at holiday resorts and an alleged drug salesman.
A man reported to police this week that 10,000 baht and two valuable amulets had been stolen from his parked car in Karon this week. The man admitted sheepishly that he had left one window partly down.
Police checked the security camera footage of the scene, detected the number plate of a Honda Wave, and set up a secret watch on the home of the vehicle's owner, Jaran Janpratum, 30, who lives in Chalong, southern Phuket.
When Khun Jaran returned home at 6am, police knocked on his door and found inside 3.3 grams of ya ice plus equipment for using it, amulets including the two stolen from the car, five mobile telephones and motorcycle parts that appeared to have been stolen.
Police said they asked Khun Jaran to explain his actions.
He said he had found himself with two children and his wife expecting a third and unable to get a job.
So he had decided instead to steal, focussing especially on resorts around Karon where he would try the doors of rooms to see whether they had mistakenly been left open, and stealing whatever he found.
He said he would have kept hunting for a real job but his mother-in-law yak-yaked him until he had no choice except to turn to crime.

Funny story. Who leaves 10,000 thb + 2 valuble amulets in his car? ( regardless window open/closed)
Amulets have no value among non thai.
The thai thief, without job, stealing, but had ya ice at home, had money for that? Not a serious job applicant. hehehehehe. Hope he gest a mentality upgrade during his time in the monkey house.Family will take care of his wife, 2 kids, + 1 coming.
